FO and a question

Hey all. I just finished a projeect I've been working on since March - a Gryffindor scarf, using this pattern. (Yes, I am very slow at knitting. I am also still a rank beginner, so I try not to get upset about being slow.)

My question is this - with the pattern and yarn I used, the scarf ended up fairly wide, and somewhat short for a scarf. Which was perfect for my daughter, but not so great for the next person I want to make one for. I was thinking I could cast on with a smaller amount of stitches (maybe forty five instead of fifty five?) to make it less wide, and maybe add a few more stripe repetitions to it to make it longer. Am I right in thinking this, or is there another way I should be going about it?

And since I promised you a finished object, here is a picture of said scarf, being worn by the recipient - my daughter, on her birthday.
