Hi everyone,
I'm pretty much a beginner still, but I've been admiring everyone else's finished work so I decided to post mine. It's not very complicated, compared to what many of you can do, but these are the first projects where I incorporated more than one color, and the first where I attached separate pieces. I used some free online patterns and made some alterations:
This was
made from this pattern. I used size 5 needles instead of 6 to make it a little smaller, but it looks like you could increase or reduce the number of cast-on stitches by a factor of 8 to make it any size you want. The yarn is 100% extra fine merino (Jil Eaton, Minnow Merino), and it took 1 1/2 skeins of 77 yds each to make the hat and the booties. It's hard to tell in the photo, but the red is a really bright color and looks really cute.
The leaves and the stem don't require much yarn, so I just used some remnants of brown and green that I had. I'm pretty sure they're just an inexpensive acrylic, worsted weight.
I didn't like the pattern for the leaves--they came out too round, so here's how I made the leaves, using size 5 needles:
Cast on 3.
Knit one row.
Next row, inc 1 at the beginning and end of the row, to end up with 5 st.
Knit 5 rows in garter st.
Next row, dec 1 at the beginning and end of row, to end up with 3 st.
Next row, s1, psso, k1, to end up with 2 st.
Last row, s1, psso, to end up with 1 st.
Snip off the end, leaving a long tail. Pull the tail through the last stitch, then weave it down the side of the leaf, so it ends up at the bottom next to the tail from the first stitch. Then use the two tails to attach the leaf to the stem.
Here are the booties:
They came from
this easier-than-it-looks pattern. For the ribbed cuff, I did k2 p2 instead of k1 p1, because I thought it looked nicer. Also, I found that knitting with tight stitches makes for a nicer looking bootie in the end, although it's a little difficult during the process! But this is a great bootie pattern for beginner knitters, because instead of knitting in the round, you make a long flat piece that varies in width, and then you fold it up and sew it into the bootie shape.
Anyway, there's my first masterpiece. :) Hopefully I'll have more to post in months to come!
