Custom made socks!

I finished knitting my first pair of socks!

Socks should be easy. And the pattern I picked out was. But then I kinda geeked out. First, I used a fingering yarn, 4 ply cotton/bamboo/nylon. Panda Cotton Print by Crystal Palace Yarns. Purchased at Depth of Field Yarn in Minneapolis.

Since this was a smaller gauge than the directions called for, I had to modify the pattern to fit my yarn. This wasn’t hard.

I started knitting with just my gauge modifications, and the socks looked awfully big around. I tried them on the intended recipient, Ben, and while they fit nicely around the bottom of his calf, they were going to be too big around his ankle. So I decreased my stitches over the next 8 rows by ¼, bringing the sock in to fit his ankle.

I increased again, back to my original size, for the ankle bones. Knitting the heal with my gauge modification was a little tricky. I’d never knit a heal before so I wasn’t sure how to make my modifications work. A little trial and error and I got it figured out. Knitting heals is fun!!!

My sock looked awfully lumpy, I wasn’t sure if the “perfect fit” was going to work well or just look like a lumpy sock.

As I got to the end and tried to follow the pattern with my modifications, I didn’t like the way the toes knit up. The ribbing pattern stopped and there was some stockinette stitch and then they just ended, straight across. I didn’t like that the pattern stopped. Also, Ben is awfully tall and has toes to match. He calls them freakishly long :-) I decided to continue with my “custom fit” and tailor the toes of the socks to match his toes. I took some measurements, did a whole lot of math and a bit of trial and error …

Check out those toes! I’m so pleased with how well they fit!

I liked knitting the gusset, it’s so thick and squishy. I learned a lot of new skills knitting these socks.

Happy feet!
