I was recommended to this community though punk_knitters because of a project I'm getting involved in called Hugs for Homeless Animals. Basically it's about knitting little blankets and pet beds and donating them to participating animal shelters to make the otherwise spartan cages a little more comfortable.
The group asks you to let them know you're doing it so they can keep track of how sucessful they are. They also ask you to let them know if you choose to donate to a non-participating shelter so they can try to get the shelter signed up. Their website has a list of animal shelters sorted by area so you can find local participants. This is the pattern I'm trying since I thought it would be more resistant to animal claws. Don't know if this kinda thing really works for a knit-along, but hopefully it will spark someone's interest.
