Stephen hesitated as he watched Helen being dragged away deeper into the ARC by Lester’s semi-tame soldiers. He met her gaze for an instant and took a step towards her. He thought he’d have gone to her if not for Lester’s voice behind him.
“Is this going to be a problem, Hart?”
“Lester?” Stephen turned, hoping that Lester didn’t know about his previous relationship with Helen… except the man was a fucking government troubleshooter, with access to fuck knows what records. Not that Stephen was going to confirm anything, Lester might just be looking for something to use against him, something to hold over him.
Lester's sighed. “Do I need to repeat myself?”
“No.”
“No, I don't or no, it won't be a problem. You really should clarify your answers, I would have thought an academic would know that.”
Although Stephen glared at Lester he managed to bite back his automatic response, instead growling out, “No, it won’t be a problem.”
“Excellent. I would so hate to have to… dispense with your services.”
“Right.”
”Don’t be an idiot, Hart. Not this time.”
“What?”
“If you will allow me to finish?” Lester paused as if to make sure Stephen wouldn’t interrupt him again. “Good.” He sighed again before adding, “You do know that Dr Cutter abused you and her position.”
Stephen felt himself pale as his mouth closed with a snap. Bloody hell, Lester hadn’t been fishing for information, he’d known all along.
“Hart! Don’t make the same mistake of falling for her dubious charms this time. Not unless you want to lose your dear Professor for good.”
“I... what?” What the fuck was Lester on about now?
“Do you really think Dr Cutter would fail to use that information to her own advantage? No matter who gets hurt in the process?” Lester raised an eyebrow at Stephen before rolling his eyes. “Are you still here? Don’t you have some work to do? Or someone to talk to?”
Stephen glare was ignored, as he was, and he left before Lester could snark again. His steps slowed before he turned towards Nick’s office. Unfortunately he knew Lester was right about one thing. If he didn’t want to lose Nick, he would have to be the one to tell him the truth and beg his forgiveness. If he left it until Helen spilled the beans, he knew Nick would never forgive him.
