James waited for a reaction, but Connor didn't move to hug - or slap - him, in fact, Connor seemed frozen. James risked smiling. “I do hope you're not going to take Abby as a role model?” At Connor's confused look, James rubbed his aching jaw.
“You probably deserved it.”
James almost winced at the hollow delivery and took a closer look at Connor. His lover looked haggard, his clothes hanging from his far-too-skinny frame and his eyes shadowed from lack of sleep. James knew he was to blame, even if he'd stayed away to protect Connor.
“I probably did.”
