A/N: The first five drabbles from the December Free-for-All drabbletree.
Needed - Christine (12)
Christine Johnson read through the files, at first with disbelief and then with growing realisation that this was her chance to prove to all who had cast her into the wilderness that she had what it took to succeed in this job.
Just think of how useful those... she flicked through the files once more... Future Predators would be in a combat situation, let alone in disavowed operations.
She could write her own ticket with them and then let anyone question her abilities. She needed control of the ARC and she would get it, with or without James Lester's cooperation.
Unnoticed - Leek (12)
Leek wasn't the idiot others thought him to be, oh, he might seem to be, but that was the plan. Who watched the ever-helpful but easily dismissed hired help? No one and thus playing that role was the best way he knew to find out all the juicy secrets that no one wanted known and pass them on to his backer.
Not that Leek had passed on all the secrets, he wasn't being paid nearly enough to put up with the belittling and contempt he experienced. No, he'd seen the secrets and understood the power knowing them would give him.
Had What It Took - Ryan (12)
Ryan paused to check the terrain, after all, he didn't want to wash out with a twisted ankle. He made his way quickly but cautiously down once he thought he'd found it.
His breath hissed between his teeth when a pebble rolled beneath his foot, the pack on his back almost throwing him off balance before he recovered.
Ryan took a moment to test his ankle before he continued, he had a time limit he needed to not just beat but to smash. He'd show all those bloody gay-bashers that he had what it took to be in the SAS.
Too Late - Abby (12)
Abby didn't have time to scream as she was grabbed off the boat by a future seal-like creature and dragged underwater. Down and down into the depths, her lungs screaming for air as she struggle to escape, to not drown.
Her life flashed before her eyes and she saw the hurt she had caused Connor by leaving him to dangle, not knowing if they were together or just flatmates. Abby knew she could trust Connor with her heart, so why couldn't she commit? Why had she let Caroline come between them without a fight?
But now it was too late.
Second Chances - Stephen/Nick (12)
Stephen sighed as he took a final look around his empty flat and shook his head as he remembered how it had come to this. The anomalies and the creatures, Helen coming back from the dead and then the fallout when she had informed Nick of their affair.
That was the moment his life had fallen to pieces, when Nick had turned his back on him and, like a fool, Stephen had believed everything Helen told him.
He turned and walked away, leaving his old life behind forever as he left the flat to be pulled into Nick's warm embrace.
