books read:
Voss, david ives: a lot like his plays. one note and brilliant. Voss showcases ives' facility with language, and with driving one joke into the ground. read with Everything is Illuminated.

My Most Excellent Year, kluger: very good teen lit, that manages to shake one of the big hurdles in YA: the parents are engaged and active - they are huge parts of the story. there is an absent (dead) mother, but otherwise, the parents are heavily involved. kind of fascinating to see how kluger solves that problem - mainly by creating a world in which the kids are as forthright and clueless as their parents. read with Catalyst, another book about highly capable teens.

To Say Nothing of the Dog, connie willis: absolutely hysterical send up of victorian literature that is also a time travel novel, and also showcases willis' interest in the battle of britain. i loved it. the obvious read with here is Three Men and a Boat, but i think this has a sneaky amount in common with zadie smith's brilliant novel On Beauty.
