book read:
the girl who kicked a hornet's nest, stieg larsson: this is the book that he was always building up to write. a critique of cold war democracies, and their failure to protect their most vulnerable citizens. it's not difficult to explain the great success of this trilogy: the tragic young death of the author, plus a memorable sidekick who overshadows any flaws the series has. it's not easy to think of a comparison, but the character reminds me a lot of mary russel in laurie king's sherlock holmes books.
