 book read:
Juliet, Naked; nick hornby: since a crucial plot point in the book is centered around people reviewing a piece of art too hastily, i will probably regret saying that this is nick hornby's best novel.  i lambasted pat conroy a few weeks back for writing what i called a caricature of pat conroy novel because it visited too many familiar plot devices.  hornby revisits many of his greatest hits (the father figure in arrested development, the cloistered music obsessives - even the main character reminded me of the narrator from how to be good in her practicality) but it never feels like he's treading on old ground, more like this is the novel he's been working it up to write.  in the last ten years i've enjoyed his nonfiction much more than the fiction; this is a thrilling return to form.  read with johnathan tropper and see how far he falls short when hornby is on form.  6-2 to the arsenal.
