five years ago, i started keeping this journal to track what i've read. i had been planning on doing a best of the five years entry here, but i noticed that the decade is ending soon, and i can hold off for a best of the decade list in a few months. instead i will put up a list here of the 10 best books i read that were not published in the aughts. as always, i am ignoring rereads.
over the last five years, i read 546 books - only 77 last year, by far my lowest total (I am blaming the lack of YA here, and maybe my commute)

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
How Buildings Learn
Bright Lights, Big City
Mezzanine
Close Range (Brokeback Mountain)
The Maltese Falcon
To Kill A Mockingbird
Wonder Boys
I Claudius
That's an exciting list, but nowhere near as competitive as the best of the aughts list forthcoming - because apparently i only read what's now.
