i've had this little thing about fandom that i have asked several of you already, but i thought i'd put it here where perhaps people can take a little time to think about the answer.
i can't think of a musician who i liked, who i was a fan of, and then they put out their best work. i mean i liked the first oasis record, and then What's the Story Morning Glory? blew it out of the water, but i wasn't really an oasis FAN. i was a sleater kinney fan, and then they put out One Beat which might be their best record, but i'm not looking for maybes (with a gun to my head, i'm not sure i could swear that i prefer One Beat to Dig Me Out). i'm looking for people who you liked who made The Leap. here are the examples i can think of (both writerly)
Lois Lowry. i loved the anastasia books, and really loved The One Hundredth Thing About Caroline. They she made The Leap with Number the Stars, and, incredibly, did it again with The Giver.
Neal Stephenson: i was a fan from The Diamond Age and Snowcrash, but then came along Cryptonomicon which still ranks among my favorite books ever written.
i guess my question is this: if being a fan of a band or an artist is not a reliable indicator of future enjoyment, then what is the point of being a fan?
