Ever have one of those days where it's just a series of odd things that all turn out fairly well, even though they didn't have to? Why, yes, I just did.
Now I will tell you about it.
The nasality project had a meeting this afternoon for the first time in months. The meeting went on & on, which was a good thing, really. But I didn't get back to my desk until after 3, which meant I didn't really hit a productive stride again until 4. And Joel & I were to play our weeklyish hour of squash at 5:30. I finished off an e-mail about recent department talks at 5:30 on the nose, then dashed off down the stairs. Just before I got out of Meliora, I realized I didn't have my wallet. So I went back to my office, found the wallet, then grabbed my phone to call Joel. The connection was terrible and cut out. When it did, I looked at my screen to see that the battery was seconds from death. It stayed on long enough for me to snag Joel's phone # off the phonebook and dial it from my office phone. It went to his voice mail. So I ran down the stairs to the gym.
At the gym, he was waiting for me as usual. (HATE my tardiness. CANNOT change it.) I asked "Did you get my voice mail?" "I did, but the squash team has the courts until 7." "Oh." We scheduled ourselves in for tomorrow afternoon, then wandered out & chatted about the evening's plans to see
The Queen.
lizzybeth529,
slinkysamurai, and Meghan came out of their fitness class & we updated them, etc. etc. The lot of us went back to our respective offices, and I considered poking some more at my attempted
installation of KMindless or working on my Oz2 setup. I gave up when I found out that aca could give me a ride home. She dropped Meghan & me off at my house, where we plonked down with dinner & some TV. I'd searched through the house for my phone charger, to no avail. Luckily she had hers with her (for reasons I don't understand) and gave it to me so I could charge up. (Yes, we have compatible phone chargers. It's adorable not really at all.) I plugged in and let it do its things. Just after 7, I thought "I'll turn it on in case Joel calls with plans." It immediately alerted me to 2 unheard voice mails. "How strange," I thought, as I'd already gotten 1 voice mail earlier when my phone'd been off to save battery power. "I'm rarely this interesting to anybody outside of myself." They were indeed both new.
gnothi_se_auton's mother, JF, had called to say they were leaving Corning and that her battery was about to die. I was SO confused. I thought they were bringing up the couch tomorrow evening around 7? We'd exchanged e-mails earlier today, I'd planned all around it... I told M "We have to go to your house right now. They're bringing the couch." The second voice mail was also from JF, who reported "We're just passing Geneseo because we hit some bad weather. The sign says 34 miles from here." But she didn't say what time it was, nor did I have her number. Frustratedly, I managed to get my voice mail to give me the "Envelope Information"(?) about it with the time and her name, but again, no number. She'd called not 10 minutes before. Just in the knick of time... We high-tailed it over to Meghan's place and managed to arrive just as JF & N did. They pointed out that I hadn't answered my phone all day, and I fessed up to being totally confused about what day things were happening. We unloaded the couch no problem & it fits beautifully. HOORAY!
I made it home in time to watch a certain mildly embarassing television program and just almost finish it before Joel arrived, but he was kind enough to let me watch the final minutes. Hmm. Because of our late going-out time, our first spot for dinner (Amiel's) was closed, and BWW was annoyingly packed. We ended up at Arby's. Bah. But, yes, I had 4 meals today. Go me? I think I'm still hungry. But mostly sleepy.
Several interesting things about The Queen:
1. aca was the first of our trio - or anybody - to arrive for the 9:55 showing, and the management seemed disappointed they had to screen it at all.
2. There were oodles of high school kids at the theater. (Regal Henrietta) Including 3 at The Queen. Um, I'm pretty sure it's a school night...
3. Bombay Sapphire & Smirnoff bottles are clearly visible at various points. This seems strange, if not silly, especially given my recent learnings about
the Royal Warrant.
4. The Queen apparently has corgis AND black labs. And they let her drive herself around in a
Land Rover! I suppose she can do as she pleases...
No, I haven't really given a full update on my life in nearly 2 months. I will find the time to do that just after I finish a batch of work this week, then find some of my lost items, including: phone charger, grey winter hat, my single-plug RCA cable, and that Wegmans gift card. Also, for those of you who keep track of such things for whatever reason, I've made a few updates to
my recent windbagging and will continue to edit it as I see fit. This morning I woke up, swearing that in a dream I'd remembered something I wanted to put in it, then went back to sleep in search of it. I woke up 90 minutes later. Oops. Also, I'm participating in a research study the library's conducting (!) about grad student's desks & technology & work habits. Hilarity will ensue.
