Spring Breaaaaaaaak

Oof, it's been a long few days.

Friday, recruitment weekend started. I picked up my student, Dan, from the airport, with only a minor hitch. He somehow managed to get from his gate to the baggage claim without seeing my sign or recognizing me by the self-description I e-mailed him. This is a bit of a challenge in the Rochester airport. The student party was a lot of fun, and I got some good talks in with some of the prospectives. Most of them left around 11, but a good chunk of the currents stayed until about 1:30 just shooting the shit about prospectives, faculty, showers, and everything. Nathan cracks me up -- I wish he hung out with us more, especially because he knows he has a good time with us.

Saturday morning started early with breakfast for the students, then I took a walk in the cemtery with Liz, Meghan, and Henry (my favorite 8 month old). After lunch together, I managed to run some errands including getting my car washed. Of course, then it rained yesterday. jisalynn, ithinksobrain, and hubcap_annie were all very helpful in getting the Saturday night dinner to happen. Thanks to them & Dick for cleaning up while I made up for not schmoozing enough with a few of the prospectives. Once home, I fell asleep watching SNL.

A bunch of us went to Jines for Sunday brunch, as is the custom, then I drove aimlessly around town with Dan to show him "the lay of the land". Delta had sent me a text message around noon to say "Flight's at 2, on time". At 12:30, I received one that said "Flight's now at 2:30." Well, crap, I didn't need MORE time to kill. I got him there at 1:20 anyways, and the departures board & the agent told him the flight was scheduled to leave at 2. Back at home, I got a text at 2:54 saying that the flight was scheduled to leave at 2:45. Confused, I checked the status online only to be confused further: it was "now boarding". One of the students was around until 7, so I went over to 86 to provide hang-out support for the others. silberzauber, Au, ACA, and antinats were playing Settlers with him, and I got there near the end of the game. Though I still felt full from brunch, I helped myself to leftover Indian from the Friday party. In retrospect, this might've been a bad move. Meghan & I spent the evening hanging out, as she wasn't feeling well, possibly the remnants of a cold/flu I had a while back. The difference was she'd been throwing up, which I hadn't really dealt with. We couldn't figure out where she would've picked this up, though. Henry? Food poisoning? We watched Guess Who. It wasn't as bad as I thought, even though I claim I hate Ashton & Bernie. Around 10, I went home. The Grand Am was being REALLY pokey -- like, it wouldn't go above 40, which led to a lot of people tailgating me (in the city, no less). I parked it in front of the building and smelled... what did I smell? I have no idea. Death of A Transmission, perhaps. I hereby dub my transmission Willy Loman. Then I started feeling ill.

A warning for those of you on RSS readers and such: The following describes my illness of the past few days. Don't feel obliged to read.

I had about 3 rounds of diarrhea before midnight, and I still felt like I was going to vomit. But I went to bed, with a bucket next to my bed. Growing up, we always had "the throw-up bucket" (there might've been two in the household, come to think of it) just in case. Good thing, too. Around 12:30, I woke up, feeling on the verge. I fought it for a few minutes, then grabbed the bucket and high-tailed it for the bathroom. If you haven't been in my apartment, it's helpful to know that from my room to the bathroom is the farthest distance you can go and still be inside, barring the coat closet. I got about halfway through the living room and had to use the bucket, but still kept jogging. That was round one. The tough part was emptying the bucket into the toilet while it flushed, while trying not to vomit more. An hour later, almost to the minute, I woke up again, but made it to the bathroom on time. At 2:55, I got up again and threw up until I was cleaned out. The bile was the first indicator, followed by the dry heaves. An hour after that, I woke up again. And an hour after that. And after that. This went on until 7 AM, I think. I'd "only" vomited those first few times. The other times I woke up were to deal with the diarrhea, chug water, or just generally feel miserable. Then I slept until 1 PM. All day I was under the weather. I had about 2 glasses of ginger ale and 6 Wheat Thins. Merhh.

Gross part over

Today, I'm recovering from all that, getting some laundry done, and some other piddly tasks. I put up a change dish on my wall this morning, which should help with desk tidiness. Dick has e-mailed us about who's been accepted after the weekend, which had some surprises in it. Always interesting. And I just found the ASA meeting calendar which is frustrating because I don't know which session I'm in. Actually, I haven't officially been told I've even been accepted. Please please please any day but Thursday. Monday afternoon would be ideal...

Time to change out laundry and rest up for bowling! TOOT TOOT!
