I was volunteered for this community service. Some xmas function for the aged at some void deck. About 150 old folks, some of which have mobility problem, has to be escorted down to the function area under their residence.
I was assigned to uncle george. Dressed in proper shoes and shirt, uncle george didnt smile at me when he first saw me. He was very stern looking. He seemed to say "Where are you taking me?"
I raised my voice a little to speak to him, and in the same loud volume as his maid, I"introduced myself as The person to look out for should he has problems during the party.
He didnt really respond.
The maid told me she needs to go buy some groceries, and left him with me. I walked him slowly to the lift, and Very slowly.
We took 20 mins to walk to the location of the party, just two blocks away. In between, he stopped and look misguided everytime I paused, and I have to nudge him very slowly to the party area. I talked to him as much as I could to keep him occupied. He seemed very suspicious of where I am taking him, constantly stopping to look around, and gets very frightened when small kids run past him or strangers brush him from the side.
He kept asking me what time was it, every 5 minutes, and I have to keep telling him my watch is 5 mins faster. He seem to be keeping time, as if counting down to something. I found out more about him as I started chatting him up.
Uncle george is a lonely man. At 67, he is a lonely bachelor, suffering from dementia, as far as I can tell. He is afraid of crowds, and show symptoms of anxiety. We stopped for a moment, and he told slowly me he didn't harm anyone. Somehow I made him feel like I am arresting him for something?? geez
The whole party was waiting for his arrival before it started. And we arrived at the function 2 blocks away from Uncle George's flat, 25 mins later. I sat him down and told him I will bring food for him for a while.
And the I went to take pictures as I am the official photographer.
