Alright, so, I attempt to avoid the realm of politics whenever I can. I strongly believe that each person should make choices on their own merit, uncorrupted by the influence of others. Basically, make an informed, individual decision, and I'll flash the thumbs up almost every time.
And, of course, a wise man once told me that discussing religion and politics is like wearing your underwear on the outside of your clothes...nobody wants to see that (or almost nobody).
Okay, so he didn't use those exact words, but I think the sentiment is similar.
Now, let me air my four undergarments and be done with it.
1) Of course, Barack Obama. I think it suffices to say that America is at a critical point, and that our future from this point is frighteningly unclear. Would this have been different if McCain had ended up in office? Hardly. But I will try to set aside my misgivings of a man ashamed of half his heritage, who may bring with him a whole new form of racism to an office that should be clean of any. What do I expect? Higher taxes. Implementation of social programs. Lots of talk. Few results. Politics. On the bright side, I'm a white male, so I can look forward to not getting any help.
2) Chris Gregoire. I mean...are you serious? The lady who had felons and the dead voting for her last time? Who didn't really win the election last time? Who got into office because a judge upheld the votes of killers and the killed? Wow.
3) I-1000. Now...this is scary. We were already able to kill our young. Now we can kill our old and infirm? Honestly though, my issue with this arises more from the details of the bill. First, a doctor...not a trained mental health professional...is able to certify someone "of sound mind and judgment" and able to decide their death. Second...this is not a single little pill that they portray. 90 does of barbiturates. 90. Have you ever seen someone try to swallow 90 pills? The bright side of that? Barbiturates have a 10 minute onset. And then about a 4 hour cycle. In fact, it's been known to be more of the "4 minute through 12 hour" cycle. Twelve hours to die. So, does the family know? No. Death certificates are forged by the doctors. The cause of death? Whatever illness they are afflicted with. No record of the suicide. Records sealed. Too much secrecy, you think? Oh, and the doctors are completely unliable as long as they hold "in good faith" to the act. Finally...the Hippocratic Oath..."above all, do no harm." How can a physician, holding to this, commit such an act?
4) I-800 in California. Folks...what is going on with our country? Can't we simply give couples the rights they need? I don't think we need to redefine marriage (simply because this is, almost across the board, a religious term and concept. We should help uphold the sanctity of peoples faith, as long as it does no harm to others, not stomp on it). We just need to provide equal rights. That's what I said. Equal. No better for ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual preference. Totally equal. What a novel concept!
Thanks Cullen, by the way, for the chat. No offense intended. I do agree with some of your views. Just not all.
