Most people I know use Facebook as their Vanilla/Mundane online presence. apparently it's a lot more user friendly than myspace and not as buggy. Also very easily search-able, so people like that kid from 2nd grade who always used to poke you with his used milk straw can find you. (yeah, I KNOW! I wanna sign up RIGHT NOW!!!)
I go back and forth on such things; obviously my life has no lack of interesting people, so am I really 'missing' Mr. spitball from 4th grade, or that wierd girl with the lice?
OTOH, it might be fun to see where people are and what theyr'e doing these days. Mostly married with kids or divorced with kids from who I've managed to track down so far.
There's this cute girl at work. I googled her name and found her on there... Oddly, never actually invited her to "link" and I'm not actually interested. It just amused me.
It's a social networking site, that really reminds me of all those "meme-fiends" that pop up. You know, the ones you friend then discover ALL they do is post quizzes.
Its pretty pointless, but its a quick way of keeping up with acquaintances and folk without LJ, and some of the games are fun, and you can meet new people that way, leastways Forest always manages to, I've not done so as yet. About the only good thing is the "status" page where you can see whatever wee sentence your friends have chosen to put on their pages, all in one place: I find that comforting, I may be strange though :)
If you do get one I'm Blue Cougar (real name? Never! :) )
I have more than enough friends (here and in real life). I can't imagine using it to meet even more people. Though I wouldn't mind using it to reconnect with friends from all of my travels (high school, other places I've lived, etc).
As far as I can tell it's just Friendster 2.0, except for whatever reason a lot more people have heard of Facebook and are getting accounts on it than ever did on Friendster. Thus Facebook is reaching a critical mass more so than Friendster or anything else.
Apparently a fair number of people like to play the stupid little games, judging by how often people are sending me plants for my patch or bidding on my picture or whatever...that I will never understand. I'm all about laziness and procrastination and wasting time but even I have standards.
friendster and Orkut were slower than ...I don't know, think of something really slow. Then slow THAT thing down.
I was alll excited about friendster at first, but then when it took 5 minutes to log in each time, I got less excited. Then Orkut was supposed to be The Thing, and I got all keen on that. THEN MySpace.
Now I am burned out on all that foolishness, and questioning how cool it really is to be as find-able as I am...let alone the worth of making myself even MORE find-able.

It's just one more possible waste of time, according to people I know who gave in to invites.

No, thank you. Not right now, I may have already reached my annoyance quota for the year already.
