G and I saw Avenue Q on Thursday at the Paramount. I got really good seats (second row, center- almost close enough for puppet spit, but not quite-- see, good seats!).
spiziks said I would enjoy the show, and I did! It was lots of fun, especially if you grew up watching Sesame Street. The strange disconnect in your head as you watched the puppets do things that puppets should not do was kind of amazing.
The music was ok and the actors did a good job, the set was neat, and the singing was pretty good. However, I cannot believe that this show beat Wicked as the best new musical in 2004. It also won best Book, which was somehow even more crazy. The puppet story was neat, but did not have nearly the complex characterization (for a musical) and interesting adaptation that Wicked did.
I saw Wicked twice the last time it was here and the next chance I get, I am going to see it again. I do not feel like I need to see Avenue Q again.
That being said, I do recommend seeing it, especially if you are between the ages of 30 and 45.
Also, if you happen to be in the Seattle Paramount area have dinner at Bambuza. It was great! G and I got lots of things and everything was good. He loved the summer rolls with fresh coconut meat and tofu...and he hates tofu!
