Moonlight & Blood Ties

First of all, a quick reminder that Blood Ties returns next Friday, Oct. 12. However, if you simply cannot wait 6 more days, the season premiere is available as a free download on iTunes, AND it's on Yahoo TV. I've downloaded it this morning, but haven't had time to watch it yet. Truthfully, I haven't quite decided whether to go ahead and watch it or make myself wait until Friday...it's kinda like Christmas...anticipation is half the fun :)

Now for Moonlight. Had to work the ticket booth at my school's homecoming game last night, so I recorded it to watch when I got home. I got home before it was over and found my parents watching it. Both of them. If you don't know why that's a big deal, then you don't know my folks. Mom, for years, was anti-anything that could be construed as demonic. She told me more than once that I "had a problem" and was "obsessed with vampires." (not going to debate the second accusation LOL) Then we both started reading romance novels, and I started loaning her my time travel and "mild" paranormal books. She liked 'em. So she borrowed more, getting into the werewolf and eventually the vampire romances. Now she reads all kinds (though I still keep my more...um...erotic...books out of sight). So to have her watch a vampire show, and LIKE it, when she used to frown about me watching Forever Knight...And then for my DAD to watch it too, and LIKE it...when he usually rolls his eyes at anything that's not action/adventure/suspense...

So yeah. It's a big deal to me :)

So what did I think of last night's show? (Warning! Spoilers!)

There were a few minor things I didn't like, but a lot that I did. I'm sure I will ramble a good bit, so bear with me.

I liked the overall story. The bad guy getting released because he was supposedly innocent and the way he played those that trusted and believed in him was well done. Like someone else pointed out, we get to see that Mick isn't perfect. He makes mistakes. It was stupid to confront the bad guy in a public restroom, at the guy's party, no less, but what I saw was not bad writing; instead, I saw Mick being a bit too confident in his ability to scare/intimidate the bad guy, and surprise! finding himself facing an enemy that isn't scared of him.

I liked seeing the glimpse into Mick's past - granted, the "I used to embrace the vampire" flashback was very reminiscent of Nick, but the difference is that "embracing the vampire" for Nick, meant that he hunted and killed. Nick despised what he was and wanted to become mortal again, and drank cow's blood instead of human. Mick has accepted being a vampire. He doesn't fight it. He drinks human blood. He just no longer indulges in the excesses that other vampires do. This is one aspect of the show's vampire mythology that I really and truly like.

I didn't really like Josef's character last week, but this week he started to grow on me. Too, he is a refreshing change from the older, father-figure routine. And he accepts Mick's lifestyle even if he doesn't agree with it. So he comes across as more of a friend than mentor, which is nice. Even vampires need friends :)

The actress playing Beth did a very good job in Underworld, so I was looking forward to seeing her in Moonlight. She's a good actress, so I think the problem with Beth's character is not the actress herself, but with the way the character is written. It's not that I don't like Beth...I do. It's just that she comes across as way too innocent, naive, soft...something. I guess I expect to see reporters portrayed as pushy, cynical and hard, affected by the stuff they see and write. Beth comes across as a newbie...like she's just out of college and on her first assignment. In her defense, I did get the impression from last week's episode that she is still relatively new to the field. So maybe that's the reason why is portrayed the way she is.

I love the vampire mythology of the show. I'm SO glad they did away with the whole garlic and crosses and holy water stuff. And it's a nice change that they can be up and about during the day, instead of being forced to sleep from sunrise to sunset. I'm also glad they don't burst into flames when exposed to sunlight. Lastly, I am ECSTATIC that vampires are not portrayed as evil, soulless beings whose only desire is to kill kill kill. It's about damn time!

One problem I did have with last night's episode was when the bad guy researched vampires, he found correct information. Huh? Maybe the writers were using this as a means of revealing more about vampires, but come on. Anyone who researches vampires would find a wide variety of legends. It simply was not believable that Mr. Bad Guy bought a few books and they told him exactly what he needed to know to disable/hurt/kill a vampire. Instead, he should have made a mistake or two, like thinking that a stake would kill Mick, instead of knowing that it would only immobilize him. I can accept the silver bit, that's a common vampire thing, but the bad guy should've also at least tried a cross and/or holy water too. Someone needs to let Josef know that there's a vampire leaking information to the public...

I like the fact that Beth is living with her boyfriend. And I'm glad to see that he's a decent guy - good-looking, successful, loving - I feel sorry for him ;) Nice touch that he was bit jealous, but was able to put his feeling aside once he heard Mick's side of the story, and was willing to help. Gonna make it harder for Beth to accept her feelings for Mick :)

It was obvious that Beth was going to have to come to Mick's rescue near the end. I liked her line, "why is it always the girl who has to stay in the car" or something to that effect. Her hesitation to shoot, I felt, was realistic, as was her expression later when she told the officer that she had shot the bad guy, not Mick. She also, while hesitating to shoot, put the pieces together and realized that Mick was the one who rescued her as a child, and that, coupled with her nightmares, made the timing of realizing that Mick was her childhood rescuer, fit.

Then there was the ending. Oh. My. God. Mick's need for blood after being shot was so well done. Then when Beth showed up...it nearly broke my heart to see him trying to hide from her. He didn't want her to seem him like that...in spite of having accepted being a vampire, he obviously believes that others would see him as a monster - maybe he believes that himself deep down? Anyway, yay for Beth for not backing down, though Mick was so pitiful huddled there on the floor. Mick carried that whole scene - Alex's acting was fantastic! I wanted to thumb my nose at all the terrible reviews :)

By the way, I asked mom and dad this morning if they heard me holler last night, and they both laughed and said yes, and they knew exactly what I was watching when they heard me :G:
