I saw one snap poll that had McCain 87% Obama 12% and Undecided 1%. I put no faith in polls.
McCain won the debate, IMHO, when he told Obama that he missed his opportunity to run against Bush four years ago. That would be the "spanked his ass" moment. Also McCain's use of Joe the plumber was very effective. That was yet another point in his court.
For Obama's part, he was very cool, calm and collected. But he stuck to his talking points for the most part. Sticking to your script doesn't win a debate. It might win him an election but not the debate.
If I were scoring the debate as percentages, I would say McCain 55% Obama 45%. Obama stuck to his points, no surprises but no new inroads. McCain scored a couple of definite hits but came on a bit too strong with the William Ayers questions so no additional points there.
My personal three debate scorecard is Obama round one. Tie Round two. McCain round three. For me the winner of each of the debates is the candidate who best made their point while keeping his opponent on the defensive. Last night I felt McCain did a much better job.
I watch the debate on youtube. I slept through it while it was on but watched it in the corner of my computer while I worked. There was no commentary on the video I watched. I couldn't say which network it was from or if it was a capture of the video stream from the University.
BTW. Not a die-hard republican. Die-hard small government. I'm not happy with either major party right now. I vote based on who I think can deliver less government. Either way it doesn't look like that is happening this election cycle. And after the 1992 election I don't vote for 3rd party candidates that can't win. At this point in my life I would be happy with no president and make congress pass everything as if they were having to override a veto. But since we have to have a president, I'll vote for the one who I think will screw me and my family over the least.
Sorry if this seems a bit disjointed but I've been awake and working all night. I hope this answers some of your questions. I don't know if could answer any better without getting into political philosophy, and I know that's not what you are looking for with your questions.
