Stolen from smells_corrupt

I know very little about some of the people on my friends list. Some people I know relatively well. But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's Parker ...she likes money and cereal." I'd love it if ( Read more... )

What got me started writing fanfic... oh, boy.

Well, I guess, technically, I started writing it when I was twelve or thirteen. I wrote this self-insert, mary-sueish Dragonlance fic in a battered, left over school notebook. It even had illustrations! I've kept it all these years as a reminder of my humble, self-serving roots. ;)

But my real start, with writing internet fanfic, came from a completely different impulse, if I'm going to be honest. It started because I thought fanfic was ridiculous and kind of stupid. It was something that thirteen year old girls wrote in their notebooks so they could pretend they were making out with their favorite characters. So I started this Pirates of the Caribbean fic over on FF.net that was basically me trying to write something that mocked Mary Sue fics.

And then... something happened. I was going through a really transitional phase in my life. I'd finished college, I was in the process of moving into my own apartment. In the meantime I'd moved back in with my parents who lived out in the sticks, far away from civilization. I was lonely, a little depressed, and scared shitless.

I remember that it started because I had just watched "Pride and Prejudice" and I suddenly wanted to read more. So I went hunting for P&P fic. Some of it was really good. And there weren't any Mary Sues. Then somehow that morphed into "I wonder if there's any Labyrinth fan fic."

There was. And I read a LOT of it over the course of about a week.

And then this little idea started to niggle at my brain, and I sat down at my computer and started pounding out "Immortal Love."

And that was how I got started in fanfic.

Nowadays, I have SO much respect for fic writers. Oh, sure, there's some real dreck out there. There are still Mary Sue fics and self-inserts, and OC characters that set my teeth on edge. I'm still VERY much a canon-snob. But I know now that there are also a ton of brilliant, talented writers out there in ALL the different fandoms, writing brilliant and incredible stories. I read more fic now, sometimes, than I do original novels.

On a different note: I totally get where you're coming from with the sarcasm. You pretty much described me to a T, there. :)
