The thing is... I did write the end chapters of "Dangers Untold" ages and ages ago. A few years back, I had a reader send me a PM. She had a friend who was in the hospital dying of cancer. Her friend was really into fanfiction and so she read stories to her out loud to pass the time. She wanted to know if I was planning to finish "Dangers" any time soon because her friend really wanted to know how it ended before she died.
It could have been a ploy of some kind, or whatever, but it seemed sincere. I asked a few questions and was satisfied enough by the answers that I agreed to send them a summary of the rest of "Dangers Untold and the final chapter as written ... which ironically (perhaps?) is about transformations from one life to the next (not dying, exactly, but it could be read that way).
Several days after I sent the chapter, I received another message from the friend, thanking me. She said that her friend had passed away the night before, but that before that they'd had a chance to finish the story and it had made her happy. It broke my heart a little. But I've always been glad I did that.
THAT is how you reach out to an author. Well, I would prefer that the person in question wasn't dying in order to do it. But the politeness and sincerity make a huge difference.
