I have a pet peeve.

It goes something like this:

So, I'm reading along with your fic, and maybe it's good/awesome/mediocre with a splash of interesting or I'm-just-that-bored. You've managed to get my attention for the first page, which usually means I'll keep going until something tosses me out of the story completely. It might be really ( Read more... )

If you keep all of what you know to yourself (and others do, too), nobody in need of that knowledge will ever learn anything. I see knowledge freely shared as a form of generosity. So please don't apologize.

I do it because I've had people bitch about not announcing it.

P.S. I did write it down on my 'Things that make KE cringe' list.

I could give you a whole list... :) However, as far as I know, you don't do most of them. And I must not have stumbled on an announced flashback in one of your fics, because I can't remember it.

I have. I know I have, but I've tried to just put in italics if it's a short one or announce with a date if it's longer.

I do appreciate a good rant! And little else gets my back up more than an author assuming I'm an idiot, so I totally feel you on that score. This particular handling of a flashback doesn't quite make me stabby, though. It could be I just don't run across it enough, because something else made me bail long before I got a chance to be flashbacked. (For which I think I should probably be grateful. :D)

I agree, it usually always sort of throws me off when an author announces things like that.

I can't say that something like would throw me out, I can't even recall noticing it anywhere. lol However, I totally agree that authors should not "write down" to their audience or not trust them to understand what's going on. If you've presented it properly, it will be obvious sooner or later.
