CHARACTER INFORMATION-
Canon Character and Series: Maes Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist
In-Game Name: Maes Hughes
Age: 26
Gender: male
Position & Ship: Navigator, The Silvana

Appearance:
Maes Hughes is a tall man in his mid twenties. His hair is short, black and spikey and he always keeps it slicked back sans one long, stubborn strand. His eyes are a stunning gold with a hint of brown/olive, framed by rectangular glasses. He has a habit of forgetting to shave now and then but hasn’t cultivated a beard yet. (that will occur once he’s older) He also still has a bit of a boyish face at this age. One thing everyone notices about Maes is that he always seems to have a smile or smirk on his face. Normally he can be found dressed in a combination of blacks, reds, or purples.

Personality:
A joyful man with a big heart (perhaps too big of a heart) Hughes never fails to make an impression on people. Whether it’s a good or bad one depends. Normally it tends to be one of a kind hearted, adamant man who wants to be everyone’s big brother. Sometimes the word “fool” is added.
But if there’s one thing about Hughes, it’s that he’s a master of deception and masking his true intentions. That initial greeting you get? Believe it or not as he puts your guard down he’s sizing you up, mostly by our reactions to his seemingly well meaning nature. It hasn’t failed him so far.
Hughes didn’t get to where he is by being a moronic goof. He got to where he is by having a mind as sharp as his knives.
Very intelligent and clever, Maes’ wit usually goes un noticed by many. But it’s there. He’s quick thinking and analytical, and always seems to have some wisdom to share for any situation. He’s also very observant and can notice even the tiniest difference, whether it’s a slightly different shade of colour or a missing mole. Nothing can slip past his eyes.
That isn’t to say though that Hughes isn’t anything like the man people see when they first meet him. He does in fact have a heart of gold and is very friendly and kind. To those who like him he usually develops into a big brother or father figure. He is very loving and passionate although sometimes those traits can border on obsessive. People will describe him as a sweetie; he will do anything for the one he loves, giving them the world just isn’t enough he has to give them the entire universe! He can come off as a jerk (a loveable one) due to the way he teases his friends, but it’s all out of fun. To certain friends though, he can be a little clingy. He is a cuddly teddy bear, although he can be an overprotective grizzly at times.
Hughes can however be serious if the situation calls for it. He is also fiercely loyal and devoted to both those he loves and those he throws his support behind. (and when he throws his support behind someone he throws it behind them fully, sometimes even going a little overboard) He doesn’t want anyone to get hurt and tends to be rather self sacrificing. He also has a strong affinity for children, not just because of his sisters or the fact he wants some of his own desperately, but because he believes they are the world’s future and need to be cared for and guided by the previous generation like himself.
A side of Hughes rarely seen however is that he can be quite shy. While more common from him when he was a child, this side of him nowadays only tends to show when he’s in love with someone…

Abilities/Weapons:
As mentioned Maes has a very sharp mind. It keeps him on top of things, and his extensive knowledge of Reial’s geography makes him perfect for navigation. His observation skills are unmatched and he’s very good at hiding his true intentions. A very convincing liar.
Physically, Maes is very agile. Maes chooses not to fight with guns but rather with push knives, always keeping some on his belt or up his sleeve. His aim is very good. Don’t challenge him to darts unless you want to be beaten.

Weaknesses:
While Maes’ wish to not get people involved and hurt is a noble one, he can be downright stupid about it, refusing to get help from others and becoming very self sacrificing. It’s a big problem if Hughes goes charging head first into a dangerous situation foolishly without back up. He’s also only human and despite having training in combat and being good with knives, there is still only so much he can do in combat against someone stronger than him. His loved ones can also become his weakness.

History:
Maes grew up miles outside of Bellcius with a family that consisted of his laidback father, over dramatic mother, and three younger sisters, Maya (age 16), Julie (age 14), and Rose (age 10). With their father usually busy working and being 10 years older than his eldest sister, Maes became the central male figure in his sisters’ lives, always helping his mother with raising and taking care of them. He is extremely attached to his family as a result.

It was a very peaceful life. Maes lived oblivious to the struggles of the world outside of his own and when not helping take care of his sisters or playing with friends, he would intensively study maps his father kept. Every kind of map was at his fingers; ones of Ivona, of Vohemar, of the islands, of all the land formations…any kind of map, his father likely had it and Hughes read it. Because of this, despite the fact he only travelled now and then (to a couple other cities with his father) his knowledge of Reial geography is vast. Another favorite past time of his was to just sit outside and watch the world around him, making him very observant.

At the age of 18, Hughes had little idea what he was going to do with his life and ended up moving to Bellcius to attend Belarus Academy, hoping that perhaps he would find a life’s purpose of sorts in the military. Maes began impressing his instructors with his intelligence (yet dumbfounding them with his seemingly contrasting personality) particularly with his extensive knowledge of geography. This ended up earning him training as a navigator.

Hughes still didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life however. Now that he was in the city, he finally understood the state of the rest of Reial. Not everything was as sweet or peaceful as his little paradise like existence back home. All the talk about possible war between Ivona and Vohemar worried him.

He wanted to do something. To help make a difference.

Maes graduated and started to excel as a navigator, to the point he was gaining attention. Around this time as well, Maes met a very lovely girl and fell in love. However, he was unsure how to approach her and only managed to befriend her. On top of that, Maes was beginning to feel…“different” around a friend of his, and wasn’t sure what this meant. The anxiety from all of this did not help him realize his life’s purpose.

Then, one day, Hughes was approached about becoming a navigator for the Silvana.

Maes had heard things about the Silvana, sure. How much of it was true he didn’t know. Regardless, he took the position anyways.

Once onboard Maes learnt about Alex’s private battle against a group trying to spark war between Ivona and Vohemar. Maes was one of the ones who believed this organization actually existed and that Alex’s cause was a noble one. One for him to throw his support behind. From then on, Hughes decided to support Rowe and the Silvana 100% and be the best navigator he could be. He had found himself a purpose.

…now if only he could figure out how to win over the love of his life too…
