The Internets are Broken

Apr 01, 2009 14:14

It's April 1, so the Internet is broken. All sorts of stupid things are up all over the place. For instance:
  • The Web Standards Project decided to troll people by saying that the purpose of the conflicker worm was uncovered,
  • Trent Reznor appears to have decided to mock the music industry fairly explicitly,
  • Wizards of the Coast have published a BS character class based on Penny Arcade's "witchalock" meme,
  • Blizzard Entertainment have let their folks go bonkers with
    • their European team announcing mount "pimpage" in development,
    • the Diablo III team announcing an "archivist" class, which is effectively an aged librarian on steroids,
    • Starcraft II announcing a transforming base,
    • World of Warcraft announcing a Dance-off mechanic, and
    • WoW's forums featuring a pseudo-epic fantasy Markov-babbler that makes nods to all sorts of pop-culture references, including Lonely Island's "On A Boat" ("And so, [Poster] sailed away on his magnificent craft, his nautical-themed pashmina Afghan flapping in the salty breeze") and the aforementioned witchalock meme ("As night fell, [Poster] and her boon companions withdrew to the safety of the hills - where they would be free from the clutches of the Wolfoids … for now.").
  • the venerable slashdot.org has also done their annual April Fools slate of stories, some actually vaguely funny.
Sadly, not all of the silly things happening today are fabricated whole-cloth. Among the surreal and strange today:
What. The. Hell.
