Tonight (September 18th 2010), I went to go check out Mastodon and the Deftones! They were playing at the Molson Amphitheatre as part of the BlackDiamondSkye tour with Alice in Chains. I was super pumped for this show for many reasons!
Both bands I wanted to see were opening up for the headliner so what that meant was MINIMAL WAITING time. WOOHOO! A score for me. It kind of bummed me out though that I had to see these guys at the Amp. I would have much preferred an indoor venue/club of some sort. Oh well. These tickets were purchased way back in May so there was a lot of anticipation for this show tonight! Been dying to see Deftones for years now and it's always good to see Mastodon =).
Mastodon came on first and I actually missed the first 3-4 songs because I was lining up to get inside! God damn. I was able to hear the music, but it's just not the same unless you're able to see the band performing with your eyes! I left so early for the show but after dealing with traffic and the line up to get into the venue, I missed the first few songs. A huge disappointment for me. When we got in, I immediately rushed to my seat to enjoy the rest of the Mastodon setlist. It was great! They played a great mix between material from Leviathan and Blood Mountain and also Crack the Skye. No Remission though! Bummer! The set was short and they wrapped up with Blood and Thunder. The majority of the crowd were definitely not there for Mastodon! Most people around us were either sitting or not even watching! What a shame. I have to admit, it was sort of weird seeing Mastodon opening up for a band. It was also not the same seeing them in a crowd of non-Mastodon fans. Gotta check them out again next time they're in town as headliners! Still love the dudes. Bill's hair looks crazy.
Up next, Deftones. In 2006, I had the opportunity to check these guys out. I didn't like them at the time and decided to leave before they came on! Big mistake! This would become one of the biggest regrets in my life. Lol. This made me even more pumped for the boys in Deftones as I've been waiting to correct the mistake I made four years ago. Boy, was the wait worth it.
The show was amazing. They played an incredible set mixed with new and old songs and played most of the old songs I loved! They put on such an incredible performance and had so much energy. Chino looked like he was having so much fun. I loved it. I think I even loved it more than Mastodon, but only because I've never seen Deftones live before. They sounded incredible live and played a fun set that everyone seemed to enjoy. WOOT!
At this point, it was raining/spitting quite a bit. It rained throughout the entire Deftones setlist, and sitting in the 400 section means you won't be covered by the roof. Lame! Who the hell builds an outdoor concert venue in TORONTO of all places anyways?
I was going to stick around for Alice in Chains, but with my original seats all wet (we didn't sit in our actual seats during Deftones. We moved up...) there was little incentive to stay. So we left. LOL. We were literally at Molson Amp for two hours for only two bands. That was fine by me! Got my $40 worth of music.
Overall, a great night of music. No complaints at all. Had a blast checking out two of my favourite bands. There's nothing on the radar right now for the next few months. Hopefully something pops up!
