On Sunday March 28th 2010, I went to go see Billy Talent & a bunch of other bands at the Air Canada Centre. This is the second time I've been at the ACC for a large concert in recent months (John Mayer for Valentine's Day w/ Antina). I'm not one to spend $50 to go see a band (unless it's Mastodon or something) but I just had a craving to check out a show and it just so happen this show caught my eye. I had a good time and definitely don't regret going. Here's a breakdown of what went happened:
I went to the show with Tuan and I think he was pretty pumped for it. I don't think he's seen bands of such nature live before so it was a good experience for him. First up were the Cancer Bats. I never got into these guys before and never wanted to. I had seen them on MuchMusic a few times and just thought they were meh. Boy, was I wrong. I had listened to their albums for a few weeks before the show to get myself prepared and I started enjoying it a bit more. Their live show was awesome. Mind you, our seats were kind of shitty, upper bowl, stage right literally on the side. Despite this, I really enjoyed their set. They had a tonne of energy and Liam sounded great live. They tore down the house and totally got me inspired to listen to their tunes more closely. And so I have. Ever since, I can proudly say I am now a fan and want to check out one of their headlining shows next time they're around. And the best part? They're from Toronto! Fuck yah! It's about time I followed a band from home.
Up next, was Against Me!. I had seen these guys before with Mastodon and I remember very clearly that these guys would go from song to song without taking any breaks. With their style of music this is quite the feat. It gets tiring playing punk rock songs one after the other! Anyways, the band sounded awesome and to my surprise were well received. Good shit.
Next up was Alexisonfire. I've never enjoyed these guys, and I don't think I ever will. I was also probably the ONLY person at the ACC who wasn't psyched to see them. They got a really warm reception to no surprise since they are from somewhere in Ontario. Can't remember right now. They played through their set, and I nodded my head along to the music, blahblahblah.
Finally, when alexis was done, they started setting up the stage for Billy Talent. I just saw these boys in the summer of 2009 at Edgefest so I knew what to expect from them. They came on and put on a good show. I personally felt that instrumentally, the Cancer Bats sounded better. Might just be the audio tuning and everything. That's not to say they didn't put on a good show though. It was great, played most of my favourites with the exception of 2-3 from their 2nd album. Played plenty of songs from the third album. Ben had some funny comments in between songs. The thing I love about Billy Talent is how real they are. No bullshit. They are a bunch of guys from Mississauga who have found success in making great unique music and that really came through in their performance. I really enjoyed the show!
A few things I want to point out, after the show was over and everyone was pouring out of the ACC, I saw Liam (from the Cancer Bats) signing some girl's arm. He was totally just chilling outside. Great to see, I'll reward some points for that. And....nothing else to point out. Lol. I'm tired right now. BTW, I just finished my LAST UNDERGRADUATE EXAM! I'M FREE!!! WOOOOOOOOOT.
Potential upcoming shows: Misery Signals @ the Mod Club, Thrice @ the Phoenix and a definite: SLAYER IN JULY! AT THE MOLSON AMP! CAN'T FUCKIN WAIT. Almost postponed for a year. Just glad Tom is feeling better and ready to rock the fuck out.
