Women's Role Have Changed

Over the past several years, the role of women have changed and evolved. Feminism has emerged and it has redefined, in my opinion, the concept of the socio-biological role of women.

Society has dictated time and again that a woman should be the emotional nurturer, life-giver, and homemaker in the family; yet, since the emergence of opposing perspectives, women have played multiple roles. As much as the mothers and wives take care of their husbands and children, now, these women are also income earners who share in the family expenses, and at times, even shoulder the bulk of it. Some women have become "men" so to speak.

Why did this happen?

It may be deduced that some men have lost the earning power to provide for their families; or that commodities' prices have hugely increased that a single-earning household will not work; or the world has become so materialistic and consumerism has rather overpowered basic necessities. At the same time, many women have now become highly educated, highly competitive, and highly ambitious. Of course, that is not to say that this current situation is wrong. But in so many respects, this drive for 'success', wealth, and the like, has led to anomalies in the very foundation of the biological purpose of women (and men). Women have become "superwomen" able to do everything a man can do and in the same way, are still women.

Ten years ago, men has still dominated the Ateneo Law population. In the past few years, women comprise of more than 75% of the population. There are more women Ph.D's, JD's, MD's, etc.

Although, it cannot be discounted that, women's emergence in career opportunities and pursuance of higher education, are centered in urban areas such as Metro Manila or in elite universities such as the Ateneo, this path has completely frustrated some women's real role, as nature dictates it, i.e., to become mothers.

Many highly-educated women, raised from well-off families, have remained unmarried, for fear of the financial constraints that a marriage can lead to. Some have completely forgotten that their biological clocks are ticking. Some are reminded that their clocks are ticking, so they try to find and catch the first male in their radar. It has been a predicament faced by many, especially by those who should know better.

Think about it.

The natural world has not changed much but why are we changing so much?
