How sparring had turned to flirting and flirting led to a movie not-date Xander couldn't really justify. But, he was applying cologne and buttoning the rest of his shirt. One button down - two. Two buttons undone seemed to be enough. He popped his collar before pushing it back down. Tilting his head, he finally stepped back from the mirror. Xander

Wiping slightly sweaty palms on the thigh of his jeans Ric glances in the mirror by his front door when he hears the beep of a car horn and a silhouette darken his door. Straightening his shirt Ric opens the door before Xander can knock and smiles brightly.
"Give me two seconds to grab my jacket and wallet okay?" He turns on his heel not giving Xander a chance to answer as he disappears through a doorway into another room, leaving the front door wide open.

"Oh, yeah, sure-" But, Ric's gone and Xander's just standing there. After a second, he leans over and peers into the main room before standing back. Sticking his hands in his pockets, Xander turns back to the car and then to the doorway.

He steps out to stand beside Xander, door shutting with a click as he tugs it closed and then there is a moment of silence. Ric drags his gaze down Xander's form and nods once before heading down the steps towards the car. "Nice ride."
Reply
"Yeah, well..." he tries, unable to form a quip. Instead, he thanks Ric and holds the door open for the other man. Once he's in and comfortable, he jumps into his side. "My door sticks and I don't...wanna' look stupid or weak because I'm not either and -- hi," he finally says, starting the car.
"Making good time..."

The street lights pass plunge the car into light and darkness alternatively, Ric watches the world pass them by, occasionally commenting on something that passes them or random that pops into his head. It's all idle but easy-going chatter to fill any silences, which actually are far from awkward.
"So if you got stuck in a lift with any famous person who would it be? And when I mean stuck that does mean you can do anything you want with them too."
Reply
"Huh. Good question. I'd need to think about that. You go first?"
Because that was safe. Huh. Famous people Xander would ravage in an elevator.
"On second thought," he says, hopefully not interrupting. "Scarlett Johansen."

It's always interesting to see how people react to that question, the answers they give usually an interesting insight into their inner thoughts.
Turning in his seat Ric studies Xander, knowing fully well that it's probably off putting but he doesn't care. That's the perk of being a passenger. "So why here of all the places on the map?"
Reply
To Xander, the staring isn't offputting. Not that Xander is showing, anyway. He does glance to the side, though. Coming to a stop, he waits for the light to change, tapping on the wheel.
"Well, I needed a break - possibly a long, long break from Scotland. Rain and...rain, and cold and -- castle. I just...needed a break. And we have a cell in New York, so it made sense."

Ric won't admit that he's kind of enjoying being driven on this... man... non-date... thing. Whatever the fuck it is that they are calling it anyway. Two guys catching a movie and a beer after, that's it. Jeez does he have to read into everything like an idiot.
There's a moment where he might seem lost in his thoughts but Ric is soon back to grinning and nodding. "Don't miss Nessie or the rain and cold much then huh?"
Reply
"It's not home. So, it's not much to miss you know?" he asks, turning the corner and stopping again. He hates traffic lights, now. And when it turns green the person in front of him doesn't move. He lightly pushes the horn, sighing.
"I never really -- felt home. I mean, tangible this place is home," he says. "My friends are my home. My family."
Reply
And that is not a euphamism.
The beep of the horn forces Ric to turn to look at the traffic in front and if Ric were driving he'd have been bad mouthing the guy. At least the car is moving once again, but Ric keeps facing forward. "It's just me and my step-Mama now. Friends pretty much are all the family I have."

Xander would be very interested in his comic book collection.
Xander finally turns and spots the theater, pulling into a space next to the curb. "Same - minus -- parents for me. It's just my friends. And nowadays we're all in different places.
"Also," he adds. "just so you know, the little sparring thing we did? Totally let you win." He doesn't wait for a response before climbing out of the car, moving around to the other side and opening the door for Ric -- which feels weird - but polite.

It's little things like that which get to Ric, something that puts them on a level playing field and able to understand the kind of point of view they each come from. Having just friends as family makes you appreciate them all the more.
Ric is left gawping like a fish, he's impressed and a little flustered at that but Ric is smiling by the time he is sliding out the car when the door is held open for him. Ric steps up onto the curb and waits for Xander to lock up the car before he leans in, palm resting flat on his chest. "And I meant what I said about the lapdance, seeing as we are being honest and everything."
And then it's his turn to walk away before Xander can respond, heading for the cinema doors. "Come on then."

Feeling like he put Ric in his place, Xander is floored at the response he gets, his mouth gaping. The hand is there and Xander can't really...think. Was there talk of a lap dance? Wait, yes, there...was. He lets out a hitched breath before catching up to him.
"Fine. And if we're being honest, then I think you meant it as a double entendre and that you want me to - wanted me to -- give in. But, I just gave in so I wouldn't...bruise -- your ego."
When they get up to the window, Xander speaks without thinking.
"Two for Salt," he says, pulling his wallet out.

Leaning against the small counter Ric is reaching for his wallet when he hears Xander speak, he looks up at the teller and shrugs his shoulders. He doesn't even comment when the tickets are slid through the gap and Ric reaches out to take one and pats Xander playfully on the ass. "Thank you, I'll get the popcorn whilst you pay."
With a wink to the pretty girl behind the counter waiting for payment for the tickets Ric saunters off to the concessions stand, flirting with the girl behind the counter and ordering salted popcorn. He glances back over his shoulder at Xander and waggles his ticket before trying to decide what drink to order. Waiting for Xander to join him before he orders, instead grabing a bag of skittles and anything else remotely candy related and sweet.

"Um, can you grab me a small popcorn, and...Sprite?" he asks. "Or, uh, I can. For me. I mean -- you know, whatever..."
His eloquence and bravado has gone out the window. Stupid effing ass slap.
