-right.

[There's a small pause, and Nathaniel takes a deep breath, before starting to speak.]As you all know, there is a festivity of sorts, held on Friday. For preparation, I am willing to teach a class on the basics of dance Thursday evening. Though I am not a certified instructor in the matter, I have attended several galas which required ( Read more... )

funsucker, it's not girly it's *civilized*, awkwardturtling, knowledge is power, what is a social life, faisal the slightly boring, oblivious or socially ignorant?, what are girls, summoning is serious business, how is this not about government, burning the candle on three ends, political moves, needs more government address, where are my demons

Miss Hanna calls is a prom, but I find the word inappropriate. Promenades are typically at the end of a high school career- many of the people here have never attended such a place.

A prom.

Right, of course, why not?

Why haven't people here attended high school? You'd have to ask each person that themselves. The education system I grew up in was more specialized.

No, no, I meant why not add a teaspoon of cheesy lunacy to this messed up shithole.

[Someone is new, and bitter.]

Because socialization is the key to remaining a cohesive civilization. We're trying to take a step forward and be more- close-knit group of people, rather than a few haphazard stragglers.

Yes, but- prom? I'm guessing from the way you're talking you've never actually been to one. It's an extremely loaded word.

Is it? Well, the wording was not my choice. Miss Hanna was the one organizing the thing.

[How does it feel to get a politician's words out of someone your own age?]

[Disturbing. Interesting. He isn't a total idiot.]

It's hard to explain- but by the time my life rolls around, there are all kinds of implications. Connotations. Prom is the night you're expected to lose your virginity. Prom is peach schnapps under the bleachers with your dumb jock boyfriend. Prom is dancing with teachers watching in a gym full of streamers, wasted for the first time at the afterparty around a bonfire at the beach. It's fancy dresses and dumb seating arrangements, hysteria about dates and true feelings, maybe a limo ride or maybe getting your make up done, and the hysteria of the popularity contest of prom king and queen.

Hm.

[Flipping through his notes.]

I haven't encountered any of that information in the literature.

Don't do prom king and queen. It's where everyone votes for one guy and one girl who get crowned.

That seems like it would breed discontent.

[He frowns.]

You really haven't been to highschool, have you?

No. I'm a magician- from London.

[Which explains everything.]

I'm a highschooler from San Francisco.

[She answers, just as firmly.]

I didn't mean to jump all over your prom idea- it's just a kneejerk reaction.

San Francisco... that's in America.

[His brow furrows. Sorry Violet, where he's from, America is currently staging a revolution to break away from Great Britain, like the little punks they are.]

But- I can understand the negative reaction if you've had negative experiences.
