What you should know about LJ's latest stupidity

Dec 23, 2011 12:49

There's a good roundup here of the issues with LJ's latest release and the response to it, as well as some more things coming down the pipe. Note that, unlike my usual links, that's to the journal-owner's custom format rather than the default format, because the new default format is making a lot of people's eyes bleed. If you want a sample, just append "?format=light" to the URL.

I am seriously considering moving this journal to Dreamwidth. (I'm already cross-posting everything on the real-name journal.) I hardly ever post anything unlocked here anyway, and comments... well. I think it'd mean losing touch with those of you who routinely post things f-locked, though. On the other hand, LJ's previous release broke certain basic functionality in my browser of choice, and we all know they're never gonna fix that; I'd really like to have a Preview button again.

And as someone on my Dreamwidth list so cogently put it, I'm just tired of dealing with LJ's crap. I'm tired of spending my on-line time tracking down what's been fscked-up this time, and what work-arounds exist, and what else I should be alert to. (Thank god I've never given LJ any money, considering what's happening with automatic payments.) I'm tired of trying to work with a company that thinks trying out a major change for one week on the Russian-speaking side only constitutes "beta-testing". This isn't fun, and I've got other things I could be doing with my time.

If any of you want to try a journaling service that listens to its users, Dreamwidth is offering open account creation (no codes or cash) through the end of the year. And if you don't get around to it before then, I think I've got a bunch of unused invite codes; ask, and ye shall receive.
