Taking another "free day" isn't easy. Not when you have an army to look after and a corporation to get under way. Zod has had a tiresome last couple of days preparing. But this day, he believes, is definitely going to be worth it. What lies beyond that doorway could be an important piece of his people. The gate is, after all, of Kryptonian origin ( Read more... )

Tess has been busy making certain everything is taken care of as well. Which included scaring the hell out of Clark, which while amusing was very necessary. She's approaching this excursion with far more caution than anticipation and should something happen and she doesn't return, she knows he's the best person to pick up her mantle. Even if he won't proceed in even remotely the way she would have.

When she is alerted as to the Major's arrival, Tess pats the pocket the octagon is currently safely secured in and makes her way to greet him. She herself is dressed much as she was for their first visit to the caves.

"Major," she says, by way of greeting and then moves forward to pin a small device to the collar of his coat. "GPS. We're not getting lost this time."

He nods in greeting and glances down at the device now pinned to his coat. "I think that's a good idea. Especially since neither of us are sure exactly where we're going to end up."

His voice taking on a more serious tone, he adds, "I assume you have it with you?"

Thanks for reminding her. Uncertainty is not Tess' best friend and having the thought of being swept away to somewhere completely unknown put in the forefront of her mind - again - only brings a frown to her face.

"Of course. We couldn't exactly accomplish anything without it." With that, she starts leading him out tot he waiting car.

Zod almost stops her and tells her to show it to him, but he decides against it. No need to start an argument of trust. Besides, Tess would have no reason to deceive him. Not about this.

He's not all that eager to ride in another primitive Earth vehicle, but he knows that it is the only way. After only slight hesitation, he follows close behind.

Tess wants to argue, so much, but warmth is the bigger issue at the moment and so she shows incredible restraint and merely gives him a look that - if she had her way - would chalk her up another count of murder.

"If you don't want the time, then we can go now. That is if you know how to get us back."

He meets her gaze head on and steps away from the control panel. "There is most likely a device that can be used to teleport out of here," he replies softly. "It won't look the same as the one in the caves. This one shouldn't need the key."

He turns away and starts scanning the icy floor. His voice not quite as demanding as before, he adds, "I think we would get out of here sooner if you helped me look."

She'd mention that she has no idea what she's looking for, but Tess feels her point has been made; she is not happy.

But he does have a point himself, damn him, so she sighs and follows suit, though she's hesitant about actually touching anything.

"You know, I don't put these things off on purpose." Fine. She couldn't resist.

"I know," he says quietly, his voice no longer hostile or argumentative.

Deciding it's for the best, he adopts more of a business-like manner and adds, "You'll have to forgive my unwillingness to comply. You have to understand that this..." He motions around him. "This is a momentous discovery for me. It's like being back home."

He continues to search as he says this; he knows that there's no time to stop and chat.

"No, I thought perhaps I'd not been clear." Tess really isn't sure what they're actually talking about anymore.

Her eyebrows knit together in something akin to concern. "Are you all right?"

"I'm fine," he says with a slight nod. "I am merely trying to make a seemingly minuscule choice of my own at the moment."

"I see." Well, no, she really doesn't. "Anything I can help with?"

"It's very possible..." His voice trails off, and he looks at her uncertainly. "Although, it may be best if I simply let it go."

Her expression remains the same to start, the usual interest in her eyes and her mouth just on the verge of either smiling or smirking, depending on what she hears.

That is until he finishes. By that time, any trace of amusement has drained from her face and her eyes have widened ever so slightly. And really, there's only one response to it.

"I'm sorry, what?"

Zod tilts his head to one side. "Why are you surprised? I really haven't revealed anything I didn't already. Today I allowed myself to be ruled by emotion. Obviously, I have certain emotional desires. And I already told you that perhaps I can accept that fact."

He watches her expression uncertainly and suddenly has the urge to apologize to her again. He holds his tongue, however, and waits for her respond.

Why is she surprised? Because if Tess heard what she thinks she heard, then... that was really not what she had been expecting.

"Okay," she starts after taking a deep breath. "I think it might be helpful if these 'certain emotions' were clarified. A little."

He shakes his head slowly. "Don't worry, Tess. There isn't anything more to tell. Perhaps my explanation came across as more of an extreme than I intended."

He knows she won't accept that dismissal, but it's the best he can think of at the moment.
