Staying out of the way while Tess has one-on-one time with his people is not something Zod is used to. It was his idea, of course, but it's still been something of an adjustment having her around and yet having to wait his turn for her attention. Especially when he sees her among his soldiers in passing, looking oddly not at all out of place.
