Author’s Notes: Response to
Challenge #310. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy WIWU fics, but wanted to do something different.
Xander had been awake for a few minutes, but was reluctant to open his eyes. His head was pounding and he was quite content to spoon Ahn. Ahn…Sunnydale Crater…Ahn…School Collapsing…Vegas…Alcohol. He shot up, his one good eye wide open. Almost instantly he groaned as the motion caused his headache to intensify.
The motion disturbed the body lying in the bed next to him. The blond haired woman rolled over slightly and tried to bury her face into the pillow. Xander focused his one good eye on her. Her face was pale and her dark make up was smudged and the overall affect of it reminded Xander of a corpse.
Xander shook his head. Xander. Beer is bad, remember Cave Buffy? He asked himself mentally. A glimmer of gold caught his attention. “Great Xander… You go get drunk and then hop into bed with a married woman! If Ahn was still alive she would eviscerate me for this.”
“I’m not married.” The woman said as she too sat up.
Xander motioned to her hand with his left before he noticed a gold ring on his own. “Oh shit.” He cussed as he began to search the bed stand before noticing a paper on the floor. He looked at it and then held it our for his companion to see.
I Robert Morart hereby certify that on the --- day of month --- of two-thousand, Alexander Harris and Cherry Andrews were united by me in marriage.
“It looks like we tied the knot.” Xander said.
Cherry paled. “Zane!”
“Your boyfriend?” Xander asked awkwardly.
Cherry nodded. “What are we going to do?” She asked as tears began to well up in her eyes as she considered her boyfriend’s reaction to the news. “I can’t be married.”
“There’s a divorce… or staying together.” Xander said after a while, his tone discouraged.
Xander’s cell rang causing Xander to wince at the volume. He picked it up intent to silence it before he noticed the identify of the caller. He flipped the phone open and before he could even say hello the panicked voice of his oldest friend greeted him. “Xander where are you?”
“Wills, bestest bud of mine, I’m hung over and apparently got hitched last night.” He said shooting Cherry an apologetic glance.
A sigh of relief was heard on the other end of the phone. “That’s all? I thought it was something apocalyptic…” There was a slight lull before Willow spoke. “Alcohol affects judgment so anything entered into while drunk isn’t exactly binding… all you have to do is go down to the local court house and file for an appeal. Although before you too do that you may want to discuss the possibility of a pregnancy or other consequences…”
Xander felt a familiar mental touch. She’s human right? Not a demon, or anything? Willow asked.
I think so… but its not exactly like I can come out and ask. Xander said telepathically while responding verbally. “Thanks Willow… I’ll call you after this is resolved.”
“Okay.” Willow said. “Bye, good luck.”
“Bye.” Xander responded as he closed the top. “Willow said we should be able to get an annulment fairly easily considering we were drunk at the time. Although she said we should discuss pregnancy and such.”
Cherry winced. “That’s not possible.”
“Why?” Xander asked before he could think.
“I’m a wereleopard, I can’t carry a child to term, they always abort.” Cherry responded pulling the covers up over her chest.
“Sorry.” Xander said feeling like a heel.
“I might have infected you last night… a lycanthrope’s metabolism is high, the fact that I got drunk indicates I consumed vast quantities of alcohol last night, so its entirely possible I lost control and scratched you.” She told him with a wince.
“Why don’t you go have a shower and call your friends or family, while I check to see if I have a scratch… and then we’ll discuss what to do.”
Cherry nodded and slipped out of bed, her nudity not bothering her as she walked into the bathroom. Xander heard the shower start as he also got out of bed and began to inspect his body in front of the room’s mirror. Finding nothing to worry about, he pulled out a phone book from drawer under the hotel phone’s stand and searched for the number and address of the court house.
Several hours later, the pair walked out of the courthouse, their marriage annulled.
“Cherry, it was nice meeting you… If I do find a scratch later, I’ll call you. I wish we had met under more normal circumstances.” Xander said as he watched her walk off.
