Shakespeare's ok, but sometimes overrated. It's usually his unknowns and his tragedies, in my opinion, which are the best. R&J is just... boring! And I have to read it (again) for next week.
I'm majoring in English and German Studies; I actually only had two Englishes this year (Shakespeare and Contemporary American Gothic). The rest is towards my German Studies minor - German Film, Berlin Literature, Issues in Modern Germany. The last class I'm taking as my Social Science is 'Film and Society'.
Maybe I should've listened to my parents and majored in film, instead! Or history. But I feel as though I'd do better with an English degree, especially a Hons. BA. :D
And you know what, it never hurts to take another degree once you're done. XD I'm majoring in design right now, but I'd love to get a diploma for piano (still far from it though) and a English degree for the sole reason that they are so. fun.
I don't know why HP came to mind but it is so overrated too. XD
English! It sounds like something I'd like to take in future! ^^ So what do you learn there?
Okay I feel really embarrassed for asking this but I don't have any formal training in writing and I'd really like to better myself so since you're an English major and a professional so... in future if I were to write any original works would you mind looking through them and giving me your opinion? ie. in terms of development and stuff. You don't have to beta it if you don't want to, and you don't have to agree, and I won't send you my stuff every time just... I'd really value your opinion. XD You know I'm blabbering so much I can't keep track.
LOL, Harry Potter is completely overrated now, especially with that Harry Potter themepark being built! :D
I think it depends on what the University you'd go to offers. I did look around and the best place to see what courses they offer per year is on the website -- and YorkU has quite a lot; about 15 per year, and considering that some classes (like the Shakespeare) host about 200+ people, the English classes can be pretty popular.
Personally, I stuck more with English Literature compared to grammar because I know I'm not that good with it. However, I did start my degree out with Professional Writing, but found that you can't have others teach you how to write
( ... )
Omg yeah I know. Harry Potter is like this gigantic cash cow to milk for all its worth. I honestly do not get the deal with the book. It's good, but not great.
Professional Writing, but found that you can't have others teach you how to write. I totally agree. Any tips though?
Eeeee thank you so much! I was so afraid I'd be a bother. I would completely love it if you do beta, and if you need anyone to beta YOUR stuff or just a listening ear for ideas, I'm all available too. :D
Yes I do have Facebook, but I don't use it often unfortunately. ^^; Look up Xinlin Wang and that's me.
Hmm... I guess when writing you have to develop your own style. See, with me, I love using cliches but all my writing professors were all like "DON'T DO THAT!" but I like to, which makes it my style.
Practice, practice, practice is the other tip. I have a ton of HP fanfiction that won't ever be posted up somewhere because it's old and crap... but compared to what I write now, my "newer" stuff is a large improvement. How I wrote changed over the years as I read more, wrote more (including essays).
As for the Beta, if I ever get around to writing something instead of story outlines, I'll send you something! :D And I'll check my email shortly.
What are you majoring in?

I wish degrees weren't so expensive. I'd probably be studying for the rest of my life. XD
