I was gone for a week this time. Orochimaru-sama doesn't appreciate it, but I suppose appreciation was never something I was going for anyway. I got what I needed, though the blood stain was a bit hard to get out of my shirt (at least he was a screamer--that made it satisfying in itself).

On my recent excavation I ran across a polar bear that I had believed to have been on the nearby island. To see that they have swam across is quite a feat, though I always wondered why those known as the "initiative" actually brought them in the first place. It is not a suitable environment for them.

I managed to escape it, by luck alone and though I did not get any samples off of the bear due to its threat, I think that I may be able to track it next time and find out more information on it. I do not know if it is alone.

Though I may return empty handed, I am glad to find that it has no interest in getting close to our homes. The security system surrounding our village, I believe, is still as strong as ever.

I will wait at least a month before heading out again. This trip has left me exhausted.

The investigation on the recent kidnapings seems to have taken a terrible turn with the disappearance of one of the suspects. The actions of this man has driven the police to believe that he is the culprit, and they are doing everything in their power to find him. He escaped during an investigation of his innocence and was last seen by the cop that had been questioning him. (Her name is not being given for her protection and those around her.)

She reports, "The investigation was going well. He had a reasonable alibi, and even had the checks to prove he'd been shopping the night the two twins had been kidnapped from the orphanage. He said he was home the other nights, and he even offered to let us monitor him for a while," just in case there were any other kidnappings, "to prove his innocence. He seemed like an okay guy - - and I've been in the business a while."

After that was said she went very quiet for several minutes before adding, "And then he smiled. His words sounded kind, but his smile was not nice." From there, she continued on to say how she had left the room to calm her nerves, and when she returned he was gone. She says that for the remainder of her days she will remember the man and how his smile struck her as "not nice".

Despite his location not being known, the police have set up multiple stations to... Continued on Page 64A

Kabuto smiled down at the paper in his hand, before folding it and putting it back into the plastic bag he kept tucked between two rolls of ace bandages. He read the paper almost every time he crossed it--which was when he was counting his supplies, after someone had been injured and he'd tended to him, or if he was switching over to a new bag because his had been beaten up with overuse. In times of peace, like they'd been having the past three years, he only took it out once every few months, which was really quite a shame.

It was a good source of humor, he thought, and even he deserved the occasional smile.

"Not nice," he repeated, chuckling as he reached in to shift the bag so that it was better hidden. Kabuto had not mentioned it to Orochimaru yet, and while he was sure that the man knew about it, it was better off not having the proof that would prompt them to talk about it. The silence between them was much more preferred, he thought.

"I can't help but wonder what they expected of me."

He'd only managed to halfway zip the bag up before he felt a strong shake, and heard something startling, but he only stood and walked to his half-open front door (closing it didn't seem like a big deal, in a town full of people that could do far less damage than himself). Heading out, he could see the plane as it broke into its third part, and the image only became clearer as he stepped off his porch.

When things silenced, he made his way up to Orochimaru's side, not even bothering to nod as he was ordered off to investigate one crash, and act like he was one of them. In the hilarity that was bound to be going on, he was sure that he could pass it off.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw another person heading in the direction of where the tail had fallen. He wasn't sure who had gone out, as he'd already started running. As ever, he had no intention of failing Orochimaru. (The man had put trust in him, sending him out without ever thinking once that Sai might not be the only one that enjoys life outside of being controlled.)
