I have always known that I have had a tendency to be independent. In almost every aspect, I have had the need to be able to do things myself. Today I hit what I think to be the extream ( Read more... )

Priming the pump.... knarl October 2 2004, 19:28:41 UTC
I'm going to make some guesses here...

I'm assuming that you have a spa pump that has a clear shield that you can see the strainer basket through. There are several ways to do what needs to be done. THis is the easiest:

Add a significant amount of water to the tub. (I know that drinking water is kinda sparce on the West coast, so you can use Vodka if you have too.
) This will give you head pressure and will help a bit with the pump. Mechanical Engineers call this Static Head. I know that getting head to tough for you, so take your time with this part.

My next assumption is that your pump is one of the low points in your system. There should be thumb screws on that clear plate. Losen those (but don't take them out) and crack that plate up. Be careful of the seal there. It can be difficult to reseat.

The idea is that the head pressure from the water will push out air through the pump and out the crack you now have.

Start the pump and see if you can get water movement. If you can, push that plate down and tighten the thumb screws. If water is not moving, don't run the pump for than a few seconds. You risk burning the pump seals.

If this doesn't work, drink some of the Vodka and repeat.

If that little strainer basket area has almost no water in it, pour some in. This might back flow enough into the pump to help with the push.

If this still doesn't work, drink more Vodka and take some digital pics of what you are dealing with and give me a call.

If it does work and you get the tub loaded with several women, drink more Vodka and take some digital pics of what you are dealing with and give me a call.

The basic problem is that there is air in the pump. Kicking or vibrating the pump may actually help displace that trapped air bubble.

After you get it going, you need to make sure that you are not "gaining" air into the pump again. A leaking pipe or seal can be hell to find.

Also, there are vent valves on many filter systems. If you can find one, open it. This is done best if both drunk and naked.
