A Post

The last time I posted here was October 20, when Laura was in Pinawa visiting with her parents - we had gone up the first weekend in October because her mom had recently been admitted to the hospital and was waiting for a space to open at a nearby nursing home. I flew up that weekend (October 25) and we drove back over the next few days. Shortly after we returned to the states her mom was admitted to the nursing home.

In November my employee resigned - he found a better job closer to home. Among other complications this generated for me, I now had no backup for my area's day-to-day functions. In other words, I was back on the clock 24/7. Other than that November was relatively quiet and uneventful.

Laura's mom passed away the morning of Friday, December 5, the day before Boar's Head. I went to the event and marshaled while Laura packed, and we drove both cars back to Pinawa that Sunday. Friends volunteered on the spot to watch the cats, for which I will be eternally grateful. We stayed for a week, including her memorial service on Friday. Ben and I drove back on Saturday the 13th. Over the course of the week Ben had to cancel a business trip and couldn't find anyone to use his tickets to see Neil deGrasse Tyson.

On the 20th Ben flew to Halifax to celebrate Christmas and his birthday there. I drove up to Pinawa to celebrate Christmas, though that didn't quite work out right either - Laura's medicine (which requires refrigeration) was supposed to be delivered on the 23rd but was delayed until the 24th, so I didn't leave until 11 AM or so. And the plan for Christmas Day was to celebrate at a relative's house, and for logistical reasons it made sense for me to pick up Laura in Pinawa and then join the festivities, but Laura wasn't feeling well enough to make the three hour trip so we opted out. I drove home on Saturday the 27th and picked up Ben the next day.

Also, the company's phone plan - which has provided me with a blackberry for the last ten years or so, and the only cell-phone I've ever had - has changed, and they made me give it back. Over the last week I've acquired a SIMM card and Ben's loaned me his old Nexus 4 so I'm not completely uncommunicative, but it's a fairly big life change for me. I have to decide what I'm going to do - buy a Blackberry Classic? Or an Android something? Or an iPhone of some flavor? I don't know.

Over this past weekend I had lists of things to get done but I came down with the ick. I mostly spent it in bed instead. But I had to get out of bed and get to work yesterday, because my new employee started.

Laura comes home today. Finally. She might even be there now. Sometime in the next week or two we'll celebrate Ben's birthday and Christmas, and Laura's birthday is coming up in a few weeks. Joy and light and laughter.

This weekend is Nordskogen's 12th Night, as well as a much closer fighting event.

So, back where we started.
