Dear Yuletide Fairy
First of all, let me thank you for agreeing to participate in this challenge and write a story for me! This is my third year participating in Yuletide and it is definitely the highlight of my fannish calendar every year. The holidays are often a stressful time loaded with unpleasant family drama (as I'm sure they are for many) and Yuletide has become my happy place in all of that. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you in advance for being my writer.
Please take all my optional suggestions and fannish blatherings as just that...suggestions. If there's a story idea you have for these characters that you like better, go for it! I’m comfortable with any rating. Follow your muse and I know you'll write a great story! General Likes: Humor, bittersweet emotions, character studies,“five things” fic, shades of grey morality, canon divergent AUs, competence, relationships where both partners learn from each other
Dislikes: I don't particularly like stories that involve non-con, hurt/comfort, or death of a major character- if character dies in canon, that's fine. I'm also not a fan of wildly divergent “in space” or mundane (coffeeshop, high school, dentist's office...) AUs.
On Porn: I often say that I enjoy "Porn With Plot." What does that mean? I take that to mean smutty sexytimes that feel true to the characters and their world. It doesn't necessarily mean that I want a well-plotted mystery with a sex scene thrown in ( though I'd probably read the hell out of that and really enjoy it!) but just that sex should hopefully reveal something about the characters and have some relationship to the larger themes of the story. As someone who has written everything from G-rated fluff to explicit BDSM, I'm pretty easygoing about sexual content. I don't think things need to be sexually explicit in order to be sexy. But I don't object to smut, either, if that is something you want to include. As far as kinks go, I don't particularly enjoy watersports, ageplay, furries, breathplay, or a/b/o. But anything else is fair game!
House of Cards- Frank & Claire Underwood
I love Machiavellian characters and I love a marriage between equals, so you can understand how a power couple like Frank and Claire hit all my narrative kinks. I would really love a fic that explores the dynamics of their very unique marriage. My favorite episode from s1 was the one where Frank's bisexuality was revealed- I thought that was a daring moment for the show. It seems like the Underwoods have an open marriage that is built on great mutual admiration and respect. If you felt like writing something smutty or kinky, it would be great to see what they're like together when things really heat up! Bonus points for femdomme!Claire.
I don't have much to add to this except that I could really see this fic being set pre-canon or duing s1. I'd like to know how Frank and Claire negotiated the open aspect of their marriage. I don't really see them as getting carried away by their own passion very often at this stage in their lives, but I bet it's really hot when it does. Of all my prompts, this is the one I could most see kink or porn being written for, but that is up to you.
Mathnet- Kate Monday, George Frankly
Mathnet was prime time viewing for me as a 9 year old nerd. I loved and still love that the show was willing to be both smart and silly. Kate was always my favorite and I was sad when she left the show, but I really grew to love Pat as well. I'd love to know why Kate left Mathnet as the show never gave us an explanation. Did she move on to bigger and better things- working as a mathematician at the FBI? Perhaps she had unrequited feelings for her partner George that became too difficult to deal with? It might also be fun to see Kate reunite with George (and Pat too!) for some crime solving fun. Casefic would be wonderful if you feel up to it, especially if you can work in some math for old time's sake. Honestly, it's really too bad this show went off the air when it did because if Mathnet had been around when I was taking AP Calculus maybe I would have gone into one of those profitable STEM fields instead of becoming a woefully underpaid lady historian.
As far as shipping goes, I do kind of ship Kate/George in an UST way, but would prefer not to read a story where George cheats on his wife. I could definitely be down with Kate/Pat, though. My favorite episodes are "The Unkidnapping"- the one with the "Anything Goes" meets "42nd St" musical parody and "The Mystery Weekend" one that is a parody of And Then There Were None. So if you want to reference or use them as your inspiration, go for it. There are also lots of other episodes available on youtube if you want to revisit the canon.
The Sopranos- Jennifer Melfi
Melfi is one of my favorite characters of all time and I'd love to read any story that focuses on her and her relationship with Tony. It can be gen or het though something that explores the UST dynamic between Melfi and Tony would probably be my preference. The thing I admire most about her is that though she is complicit in her own way with Tony's crimes, she is the only one he never corrupted. So a missing scene from a season one or two episode or even a post-series fic that deals with how she reacted to the events of the finale would really be my cup of tea.
I enjoy the canonical dynamics of their relationship, but wouldn't mind if you made the UST between Melfi and Tony into "resolved sexual tension." I could really see her giving into him at last after she kicks him out of therapy- because that would really be the no turning back moment for Melfi. My only major Do Not Want for them is an AU where she tells him about Jesus Rossi. Melfi's "no" was such a powerful moment for her character and I wouldn't want her to lose that.
Wise Child series- Wise Child, Juniper
This is another childhood favorite of mine. I love the family of choice that exists between Juniper and Wise Child and the mentor/apprentice, mother/daughter aspects of their relationship. Since we get Wise Child's POV in the book, it would be great to view their relationship from Juniper's perspective. Juniper really has always intrigued me. She apparently was once in love with Wise Child's father who threw her over for the evil and selfish Maeve. Yet, she never seemed to find another partner. Did Juniper have a longing for motherhood and for Finbar's daughter in particular? How did she work through Finbar's rejection to become the mature and grounded figure we meet in Wise Child's narrative?
I have read all of the books including Colman. I didn't really care for Colman the book (though I like Colman the character)- so something set between Juniper and Wise Child, or during the events of Wise Child would be my preference.
