Free RPG?

Jun 08, 2010 17:58

So, I was sitting down at the Hippitat with three of the new apprentices, and one of them made a joke about his having armor class zero. One person present didn't get the reference, and so I launched into a long-winded explanation about the evolution of role-playing games from face to face group activities with paper and dice to things like Balder's Gate and World of Warcraft.

One of the apprentices said, "I bet you'd make a good game master."

Another asked, "Is there a chance we could play some games like that here?"

I told them that I didn't have any gaming stuff with me but that we could order something from Amazon and that it would be here in a few days. Being broke young hippies (suddenly I'm hanging out with broke young hippies - hurray!) the apprentices didn't like the idea of spending money. I'll spring for some dice, but I'm sure there are simple RPG games systems available on the internet.

Do you know of any?

What kind of campaign do you think I should run for them? Straight up Sword & Sorcery? Something Traveleresque? Maybe something along the lines of Call of Cthulu?

All suggestions and resulting discussion most welcome.

Edit: Another desired game characteristic besides thrift is ease. Newbie gamers and a GM who will need to learn the rules before demonstrating them.

Further edit: I've learned that GURPS Lite is available as a free download, so I'll probably use that for rules, but I'm still looking for suggestions as to genre and specific adventures.
