Well today was a bit bittersweet...thus far. I found out first thing that I did not make it in the upper level classes for next semester. Needless to say I was considerably upset. Only seven people in total were accepted and only three from my class were accepted. This did not make me feel better however though as I continually strve to be the best. The best does not care who did and did not make it.
Then we had our conferences for my acting class today. I saw a couple of people from my class before I went in for my conference. They were a little upset. They had not made the upper level audition either and said that our teacher was very direct with their shortcomings. "great" I thought "she is going to have a field day wtih me" But I sucked it up and went in there. Much to my surprise that is not the course the conference took at all. Mirla told me that her and Ray (the two acting teachers I have had) discussed my performance for the audition. They both agreed that I do really well scene work. She said in fact that they both agreed that they love the work I do in scenes but that for some reason I do my monologues in a completely different way, more mechanical and an indicating "acting" style. She said they were both really confused by this and asked me if I had noticed that I do this. I actually have noticed that. I told her that I think its really weird as well, I can feel such a difference when I am doing a monologue as opposed to when I am in a scene. I am so in it for scenes and so self concious and distracted in monologues. I told her I have yet to figure out the cause of this bc I would naturally fix it right away. She said they did not place me in the upper level classes because in order to get cast in parts you have to perform monologues so they thought it would be better for me to get a little practice and they want me to take a voice and movement class to help me with this before the audditions next semester. I can completely agree with this. She said that once I get this stuff worked out she sees really good things happening for me. She says I am very funny and an interesting type of person...the perfect type of person for this stuff. I was very glad but stunned to hear this. I like Mirla a lot but she is tough so I expected to hear more about my shortcomings but she said I didnt really have any...I just need to work on the monologues and enhancing qualities like my voice to a greater degree but she said I have a good handle on all that I need.
I have to say this was by far the best rejection I have ever recieved. This is probably better for me than just getting in. (not that I am claiming to be glad to have been rejected...bitch please) But this is perfect fuel for me to really dive deep into my core and utilize what I have to make this work for me. I want this and I can taste it. So Dammit I am gonna fucking work my ass off and get what I want. I have a lot of work to do but I am ready and excited to do it. You gotta be tough, determined, and hungry to make it in the business. I had a hard time with the tough part when I was in ballet but it toughened me up eventually and now acting has given me little kicks in the ass to really get me going. I am so ready to get this shit rolling...next time I am coming back with good news.
