Do you want to know my biggest surprise about what they are eating over here? Salsa. There is salsa on everything. McDonald's has a salsa burger and a salsa chicken sandwich. All of the bars have a "Mexican burger" and nachos on their appetizer list. The mozzarella sticks come with salsa. Salsa is one of the random condiments at the breakfast buffet. But that is not to say any of the food is spicy. We ARE still in Scandinavia! They just like their salsa. Its bizarre.
So after the fanciness of last night's dinner, today was more my style. I'm just not a fancy restaurant kind of girl. I stopped by this restaurant my guidebook recommended, but when I read the menu, I just wasn't interested. So I walked back down to the trendy downtownish area and ate at a little cafe that served "Danish Gyros" Not quite sure what was in them, but the line was huge, so I figured they had to be good. I think it was beef instead of lamb and then a different kind of pita (not really a pita)). Then I had some white chocolate flavored ice cream dipped in chocolate powder (upon the recommendation of Roger who says he has had it in Norway a lot). It was perfect and totally hit the spot. I ate my food while sitting along the river that runs through downtown. I felt just like a local! But that was definitely more my style than all of the stuff you can't pronounce and all the weird combinations of food you would never think of. Sure, that stuff is fun to do every once and a while. But a gyro by the river is always a good bet.
Everyday for lunch I have been eating at the cafeteria for the company I am visiting. They have these little pieces of rye bread and then random things piled on top. Bread, ham, basil, caviar, tomato. Bread, kiwi, egg, sprouts. Bread, salmon, pineapple, asparagus. After 4 days of that...I'm ready for normal food.
You knew there was going to be a more detailed food update at some point, didn't you? :)
