In the song "You Can Call Me Al", there is a french horn part that goes kinda high. Anyway, I played it with David. He declared that I had played it sharp... in his words, "like half a step sharp". Well, seeing as I can't play that note that he said I did at anything greater than 4dB, I doubt that's what I played. I explained this to him. At which he replied "your range sucks!"
Well, if that were the highest note I could hit at all, that would kinda suck. But I can hit a high F (top of treble cleff)
Anyway, David was shocked that I couldn't play that, and that he can play an octave above it on trumpet.
Me: "well, of course, trumpets generally play an octave higher than trombones...."
Him: "what? you can't play above the staff?"
Me: "well, not above YOUR staff, no"
Him: "wow, you're range sucks then!"
Then we got into an argument in which he said it was easier to play high on trombone than trumpet, and that he could hit higher notes when he played Tuba for a short while. I don't know what was confusing him, but I would have thought it was pretty obvious that trumpets play higher than trombones.
