To set the scene: at Lunch Bunch yesterday (I help watch all the kids while our preschool's BoD meets.) Mr. G happily played with Chinese angrams for most of the afternoon. The school has a ton of colored angram pieces along with diagrams showing different items you can make - animals, vehicles, etc...in fact, so many of the kids wanted to play there were two at the magnetic easel and several more spread out on the floor.
Well today, he made a beeline stright for the easel and began constructing another angram. I was half-listening while prepping snack for everyone, and lo and behold I hear a small voice spell out the world t-u-r-t-l-e, then start putting the sounds together and coming up with the word "turtle." Without prompting or help. This was the first complex word he read all on his own (i.e. words beyond zoo and cat). And darned if he didn't do it again after circle time! This time everyone got to choose a library book to take home. As we were leaving he began spelling out then sounding out the title without being prompted or helped by me. And the title was Orange Juice. I am soooooo proud right now!!!
