Goodbye to 2008, Hello to 2009!

Dec 31, 2008 16:18

I like to look through my event calendar (Sometimes fondly referred to as my "backup brain.") before pitching it at the start of the year. Reading the entries reminds me of how much got crammed into 2008, good and bad...

On a personal level, more good happened than bad to me this past year; and I have a lot to be thankful for. Here are some of the highlights (in no particular order)...

*Mr. G started preschool and loves it.
*Met a new friend, Cheryl F., through my son's friendship with her son, Mr. T.
*I helped organize a succesful Book Sale at my local library.
*I learned how to make sushi properly.
*My friend Anne M. got married!
*My friends Leif and Emily had a beautiful baby boy! (And touring the Theo Chocolate factory for her shower was really cool!)
*Hooky Day at Wild Waves was hugely fun ; most especially because Mr. G was finally of an age to really enjoy it!
*I got to see the Mythbusters duo in October.
*Almost the entire family was together for Thanksgiving dinner (Except my brother, he had to work.)
*Getting to experience everything from a pumpkin farm to ancient Roman statuary through my son's eyes.
*Exploring lots of the local parks through spring, summer and early fall!
*Picking blueberries!
*The Presidential election results!
*There is peace between my parents.
My Dad is out of a really bad situation; and so is his cat.

Unfortunately I know too many people for whom 2008 was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year (Here's to a better year ahead everyone!) And there were some very sad events....

*My hubby's grandmother passed away. Expected yes, (she was in her early 90's) but still sad.
*The unexpected death of my friend Bert in July (RIP, old friend.)
*Attended a memorial service for another dear friend, Betty, who passed in 2006. Sad and happy at the same time...
*Several friends losing their jobs and/or houses towards the end of the year.

Nothing ugly here, just taking stock of what I created this year...

*Four new outfits for Norwescon.
*Two hand-knitted sweaters.
*Three pairs of socks.
*One hat and scarf combo.
*One Xmas stocking.

And yes, I have a few things that will be carryovers for the coming year...no doubt I will think of more, but this is what is in the memory cache at present.

*My meme presents still aren't complete. The felting project I have been working on for Sunny Jim has failed miserably and I am considering another approach.
*I need to complete and send in my Norwescon pro survey etc. (I thought I had and it turns out I haven't. My bad, bad, bad...)
*Am a bit behind on NWSFS blogging and some editing for Norwescon but am working hard to catch up.

So  I am looking towards to 2009 with something approaching cautious optimism. Too realistic to be "happy, happy, joy, joy," and yet too optimistic to be glum. A new year gives me a chance to sweep out the metal cobwebs and move forward with purpose!

Happy New Year everyone!

In 2009, may we all have the foresight to see where we are going; the hindsight to see where we've been; and the insight to see when we've gone too far.  Best wishes and safe celebrating everyone!
