Yesterday I turned in my computer to the friendly folks at Best Buy.
My hard drive fried. Since I had purchased the service plan (finally I actually get to reap the benefits of this), they said they would replace my hard drive. They said it would be 4-5 days.
It's very tough.
I knew that I was dependent on my computer, but I didn't know it would matter this much. First off, they wouldn't back up the data, so I had to frantically transfer what salvageable data there was (the last couple years of computer data) into 180 GB of my external hard drive. I know that I missed a few things that I will have to re-download, like albums I forgot to import and other programs that I forgot to copy over. It just feels weird that I had to all of a sudden figure out what was important and what was expendable. I got all the essentials, like my music, music videos, movies, homework, etc. I only have what I really need. I feel like it's a new start, in a way. I can start with a completely clean (and not broken) hard drive, install only the programs I know are safe, and be extremely efficient in management.
What surprised me was how bored I was without my computer. I got home early from school, like I always do on Thursdays, so I had a lot of free time to spend, but I used a lot of it studying for my two tests tomorrow. But I like to pace myself - one hour of studying, 15 minutes of not studying, so on and so forth. Today was different. I had no idea what to do. Usually I would just read the news or fix my fantasy football team or something like that. I could have gone on my sister's computer (like I'm doing right now) but then I didn't have any of my bookmarks or programs and stuff.
So what did I do?
Well, I listened to music the whole time, sometimes getting up to dance a bit (I was alone in the house at the time). I even busted out the DDR pads and played Mario DDR for a while. I actually got up and moved around for a change. Well, it's a change now because I'm not walking the hills of Seattle delivering mail - I think I've gained a few of those pounds back since I've stopped working. I feel good that I did something healthy instead of just sitting around. It's definitely DDR season (I say that DDR is a winter sport) so I will definitely have to bust that out every day. I'll have to go on walks in the rain, too, and maybe do a few push-ups.
So in conclusion, maybe my hard drive frying was a good thing. I get a clean start, and I'll be getting more exercise, even when the computer comes back all fixed and functional. Good thing I don't have any papers due in the next couple of weeks, otherwise I'd probably be typing up that instead of this. Maybe everyone's hard drive should fry at least once - you could get a clean start too.
In other news, Jamie Cullum concert tomorrow with Joanie! I'm so stoked. I'll have a status report soon.
