Except for the rain, Saturday was actually a really good day for Faire. In fact, I rather like going to Faire in the rain, especially late in the year, as it keeps the crowds down. The major downside to Saturday was my
unexpected dearth of cloak, but that was a minor issue, and was more than made up for by the amusement value the incident provided on
Sunday night.
Anyway, the highlight of the day was running to, and getting caught up with,
vyxenmacd. She was in town for the weekend to distribute pamphlets and spread the word about the
RESCU Foundation. I gave her some Reiki as we sat and talked in the Dragon Inn. After which, she felt much better than before. I also gave Reiki to
heldc to help with her sore ankle, though I never heard back from her later in the day to see how well it did or didn't work. I also saw
kmusser with
zammis and
radiant_one.
After clearing up briefly at mid-day, the weather got steadily worse. When the rain was fairly light, Vyx and I sat under a canopy and watched the weather, and all the patrons and kids slogging through (and sometimes playing in) the mud. When the rain got really bad, we went into the mask shop near Bull’s-eye. The rain let up, but the clouds were getting worse, so I decided on a quick exit. The timing was perfect, because after I got to the car, the weather was less like rain and more like a monsoon.
Sunday was a near-perfect day for Faire. I say near-perfect because while the sunny skies and cool air were glorious, the epic amounts of mud one had to trod through were not. Still, it being the Day of Wrong, I had no compunction against wearing my non-garb snow boots with my garb. I also wore a very non-period green silk shirt with buttons down the front.
On my way to gate, I ran into
keetara and
hrandy36 in the truck, still getting into all of their garb. A little later, Doc (
scaleslea) arrived. When the gate show started, I caught up with Doc, as Kee and
hrandy36 were still getting dressed. It had been a long time since Doc and i had time to hang out and chat, so I accompanied him on his wanderings as he distributed happy birthday roses for a hit-and-run delivery for a friend of his in Wolfstone. En route, I was introduced and re-introduced to a number of his friends... most of whose names I have already forgotten. But we also had a rather good conversation. It was time well spent.
Repeat-offenders encounter-wise included Kmusser, Zammis, and Radiant-One... who was less than impressed with my non-period green silk shirt. Apparently, the buttons bothered her, and she expressed a desire to take a knife and cut them all off. As much as I like Radiant_One, I get more than a little nervous when women start talking about knives and cutting things off, most especially when I'm somewhere in the middle of it all. So, I politely declined to allow her to go forward with her (pun intended) cutting plan. One thing that was really cool to see was Vyx talking to Zammi about possibly getting her and other students from her school involved in RESCU as care providers.
Near the end of the day, we had
whillow,
Papabear008, and
Fairerhiannon join us. Whillow is an amazing lady, so any time with her is always a treat, no matter how brief it may be.
It had been my intent to bug out of Faire at my usual time, but Vyx asked me to please stay a while longer, and I was enjoying spending time with her and everyone else, so I stayed to about 6. I had thought that while traffic leaving Faire would be bad, it wouldn't get truly ugly until after Pub Sing. That was a huge mistake. Once I got into my car, it took me a good 15-20 minutes just to get to the gravel road. Then, I did not move at all until 7:45 - more than an hour later. I was finally out of the lot by 8ish, and didn't get home until just past 9 o'clock.
So much for beating the rush.
Lord knows that while I have mode great strides in rolling with the punches and dealing with life's difficulties, I remain entirely human and far from perfect. I was tired from a long day, cranky from being stuck, and starving from not having had dinner before leaving under the assumption that I would be on the road in short order. I owe much of my sanity to
pathweaverdana. I called her while I was immobile, and she let me vent and kvetch my frustrations.
Aside from that bit of ugliness, it was an awesome weekend.
