Summary: AU. Kate Todd survives her shooting with some brain damage and is placed in Witness Protection as Maura Isles.
Somehow, Kate Todd survives the gunshot wound, but she’s different afterwards - Brain damage, the doctors said. It gave her a complete personality change, and everyone says she’s lucky that it’s all the damage the bullet caused.
She learns they told her team that she’s dead, and Witness Protection tells her she is now Maura Isles, a medical examiner who’s going to work in Boston. Maura’s ashamed to admit later that she burst into tears at learning that she would never see her co-workers and family again - Rachel is going to be completely devastated and probably blame herself. She hopes their brothers will take care of her and their parents, however.
Her medical degree (Something she and Ducky had in common, and talked about when no one else was around, and God, she wonders how he felt at faking her death.) comes in handy, something she’s not sure she’s happy about. Kate (Maura now, can’t forget that) only got one because her father said she needed it. He had never approved of her working for the Secret Service and then NCIS.
When Maura meets Jane Rizzoli, the two instantly click - She tries not to think about how much Tony would probably like the tough cop. It hurts to think of Before, so she tries to pretend like she’s always been Maura Isles, even when she’s alone.
And here, Maura can be open about her sexuality - She never told anyone except Rachel that she was bisexual. She had worried about her team’s reaction even though she realizes now they probably wouldn’t have cared. Not one of them ever found out about the girlfriend she had for a few months right after she joined NCIS. She suspects Gibbs knew, however, and just didn’t mention it to her because it was none of his business.
About a year after she moves to Boston, Maura finally relaxes and accepts the life she now needs. A year and a half after that, she and Jane are finally together. She’s never fallen this hard or this fast for anybody before, and Maura actually loves it.
“I love your insane mother.” Maura laughs as Jane glares at her. She rolls over and kisses her girlfriend, and things quickly heat up.
“Well, I love you.” Jane knows that Maura’s hiding secrets, but she won’t pry them out of her - She’ll tell her when she’s ready, and Jane will be ready for her when that happens.
“I love you, too.” Maura wants to tell Jane her secret, but she can’t. And she terrified she’ll lose her if she ever learns the truth. It’s an irrational fear that’s plagued her for a long time.
Two days later, Maura and Jane are called out to a crime scene. The medical examiner is shocked to learn that the victim is a Naval officer, and she wonders if NCIS will take over.
“Well, they’re going to have to go through me and I won’t let them take charge.” Jane’s had a run in with NCIS before, and she hates them.
“Well, that’s… nice, I guess.” Ever since they learned the identity of their victim, Maura’s been dealing with a bad feeling that won’t go away. She won’t deal with it, however.
“Maura, relax. What are you so upset about?” Jane frowns at her girlfriend, suddenly worried about her.
“Nothing, I’m fine. Don’t worry about it.” Maura hopes her lie is convincing enough and she lets out a breath when Jane seems to buy it.
The next day, Jane is complaining to her about the NCIS agents that are visiting and the bad feeling suddenly worsens. Maura tries to work, but it’s hard when her hand’s shaking. She’s talking to Korsak when it happens.
“Kate?” Tony DiNozzo and a female agent are staring at her in shock.
And just like that, Maura Isles’ world is ripped out from underneath her.
