Summary: Missing scene for "Faith". Sam struggles to be strong for his brother on the way to Nebraska.
Sam Winchester desperately hoped the faith healer he had been told about was legitimate. He needed to save Dean. How could he go on without his older brother? Sam wasn’t about to let Dean die.
To say he was surprised when Dean showed up at the motel room was an understatement. What had his brother been thinking? He was sick! Sam couldn’t wait to get to Nebraska.
Helping his brother into the car hadn’t been easy. Dean had protested the entire way, but it had been a long trip to the parking lot. Sam didn’t mind helping out Dean, but he was running on three days of no sleep. He couldn’t.
“Nap. You’ll feel better. We’re going to stop at a motel room before we get to Nebraska,” Sam told his brother. Dean was so pale and he was starting to get more and more worried.
Dean rolled his eyes, but even that seemed to take effort. “I’m fine, Sammy.” He wasn’t about to break Sam and tell him there was no hope. The specialist wouldn’t be able to help him. But sure enough, Dean’s eyes closed a few minutes later.
Sam had to keep checking to make sure his brother still had a pulse. Dean never once woke up, and he was terrified that his brother was going to die early, on the way to visit the faith healer.
Three hours after they left the original motel, Sam stopped at another one. Dean needed to rest, and not in the Impala. It couldn’t be comfortable for Dean. It’d be better for him to nap in a bed. Sam helped his brother into the room. He had asked for the closet room available so Dean didn’t have to walk far.
“Get your hands off me, Sam. I don’t need any help walking,” Dean protested, but he let Sam walk him inside anyway.
“It was the only open room available. Sorry about the one bed,” Sam told him. He and Dean had shared beds before. This wouldn’t be so bad.
“It’s okay, Sammy. I don’t mind the one bed.” Dean was exhausted and just wanted to go back to sleep. Apparently, this heart thing meant he slept all the time.
“I’m going to go get one of the blankets. I know you’re cold.” Sam wanted Dean to be warm. He looked pretty cold.
Dean had no energy to get underneath the covers, so he didn’t protest when his younger brother laid the blanket over top of him. “Thanks,” he murmured.
“You don’t have to say thank you, but you’re welcome anyway.” The events of the past three days were finally starting to catch up with Sam, and he wanted to pass out. But how could he sleep if Dean was dying right in front of him? What if he died when Sam was sleeping? It’d be all his fault. Sam got into bed next to his brother, but fought against sleep.
“Sleep, Sam. I know you haven’t gotten any in the past few days.” Dean knew the kid like the back of his hand.
“I’m fine,” Sam lied. He had to make sure that Dean wasn’t feeling sicker than he already was. He gave a fake smile to his older brother.
Dean wasn’t buying that, but let it go. “Whatever you say.” He closed his eyes and went to sleep. He was just so tired and couldn’t stay up anywhere.
Sam rubbed his back to get Dean to calm down and not be so tense, even in his sleep and tried desperately to hold back tears. “You’re going to be okay. You’re going to be okay. You’re going to be okay. You’re going to be okay. You’re going to be okay,” he murmured over and over again. The tears he had been trying to hold back for the past few hours finally came forth.
Sam was going to make sure that the faith healer healed Dean. He wasn’t going to let Dean die. That wasn’t going to happen, and that was that. Dean’s heart would be completely fine by the time they left Nebraska.
He knew Dean would do the same if he was in this position. They looked out for each other. Always had, always will.
Sam would do anything for Dean.
