Summary: Dan and Frank were more than friends, but never told anyone.

Dan and Frank were just friends. No, really. At least that’s what they told everyone else. Their boss suspected something, but never said anything.

Behind closed doors, it was a different story. Dan and Frank listened to music and had sex. They never talked about work then.

They kept this up for years. This secrecy worked for Dan and Frank. It always had.

Then one day, Frank broke it off. Dan didn’t understood why he had done this, but reluctantly accepted the break-up. They returned to being just friends. Then Frank was transferred, and he and Dan didn’t see each other for a long time.

Dan was on a case with Jack when he ran across Frank. It was awkward for a little bit, but Dan and Jack were soon drunk and telling Jack about the good old days.

“I loved you,” a drunk Dan confessed to Frank after they had sex for the first time in years. He’d have never said this when he was sober, but his walls were down.

Frank sighed. “I loved you, too. But it’s better this way. We wouldn’t have worked out.”

“It could’ve.” Dan wasn’t going to say anything else. He just knew that Frank was going to hurt him again.

Frank got out of bed and then leaned over and kissed him. “Goodbye, Dan.”

That was the last time Dan and Frank ever saw each other. Two years later, Dan learned Frank was living with a woman out in California and planned to marry her.

He got drunk that night and ended up confessing everything to Jack. Dan needed someone to talk to about his “more than friends” relationship with Frank, and he trusted his partner.

Jack listened and let Dan spill all his secrets. He didn’t judge him for anything. No one can help who they love. “You’re better off without Frank. I know you loved him, but it’ll be okay.” He felt awkward saying this, but Dan needed to hear it.

When Dan sobered up, he immediately regretted telling his partner everything. “Thanks,” he mumbled before bolting.

“You’re welcome!” Jack called after him. His partner was … eccentric, to say the least, but Dan deserved to be happy.

After quickly getting over his embarrassment over the situation, Dan apologized and explained he didn’t want to talk about being in a relationship with Frank again. He just stuck with the work stories after that.

Dan and Frank hadn’t gotten a happy ending or even closure, but Dan would always value their friendship. He just didn’t say it out loud.
